Chances: Harvard, Carnegie, Cornell?

Hey,

Currently a first semester sophmore. Here are some of my stats so far..

SAT: 1300 (700M/600V)
GPA: 3.45 (this semester, I estimate to get a 3.75)
Extra:
- I own a small internet company the grosses $200k+ yearly since I was 17
- Entrepreneurship club
- Real estate club
- Investment club

I'm currently a finance major at Bentley College but am looking to switch computer science with a business minor. I've seriously been having a tough time maintaining a business, while juggling college. I was also really disappointed with my grades freshman year and it was partly due to bouts of depression I was suffering due to certain events in my life, as well as the heavy work load.

I'm thinking I will get a 3.75-3.8 this semester as I've been putting my business on hold a little for a possible transfer. I am also thinking about taking next semester off, working on my business and then returning in the fall to try to aim for a 4.0. So the best case scenario is that I end up with a 3.68 for my first two years in college.

Can anyone enlighten me on my chances?

Very much appreciated

Thanks

I'd say you stand a good chance of getting into CMU, but Cornel and especially Harvard are going to be reaches. You might want to try to find more schools you are interested in.

I don't think it's a good idea to leave school for you business, unless it is really promising. Maybe if I knew a little bit more about your business I could give better advice. You might also want to consider looking for someone at Bentley who can help you with your company.

what is your internet business' online address?

I own a small business as well. but it's not an online business, it's a sporting goods wholesaler. not much to say about this so i wont even mention it on my essay.

what sort of business do you do?

You won't get into Harvard. I'm not saying this because I'm a pompous a-hole, but the reason being that you're from Bentley majoring in finance. Harvard makes it clear that it won't accept credit from:
"technical or vocational courses such as journalism, law, agriculture, nursing, business." What this means is you won't be qualified as a transfer student and must do a freshman application, in which case it's still unlikely you'll get in. However, if you have taken at least 30 credits of liberal art classes (and if they are all transferable) then you might be qualified to transfer. Even then, it's still an uphill battle. I'm not quite sure on the computer science program, so no comment there. I believe Cornell's policy is similar, the only Ivy that accepts business-credits is Penn, at the Wharton School.

"I've seriously been having a tough time maintaining a business, while juggling college."

Not to sound condescending, but what makes you think that you would be able to do that at the schools you are planning to transfer to? The workloads at Harvard, Cornell and CMU aren't exactly light.

Sorry but you don't stand a good chance for CMU. Their transfer acceptance rate overall last year was about 15%. For Tepper in particular I believe it is 0% (no external transfers).

PS But 200K yearly is a lot of money! Congrats on the business.

Thanks for the honest assessments so far. If I get into any of these schools, I'm going to put the business on the back burner for a year or two and revive it each summer. I won't be making as much money but at the end, I'll have a pretty solid degree.

I will let you guys know how things play out.

Thank You

About course credits: Most of the credits I took so far are for general education... calc, literature, philosophy, I do believe these credits are accepted.

What do you guys think my chances at NYU are?

Thanks
