Chances: Harvard, MIT, Brown, etc. -Thanks in advance!

It seems like all of you guys have a lot of experience telling people what shot they have at certain schools and so thought I would give it a try. Here goes:

Colleges:
Harvard (EA)
MIT
Brown
Cornell
Tufts
WUSTL
BU

White male at an unknown suburban public school. Rising senior.

Rank: Top 10/~450
SAT: 2270 (790V/780M/700W)
PSAT: 219 (80M)
Sat IIs: 720 Bio, 710 USH, 690 Math 2 (retaking bio and math)

APs: Euro Hist (4) and USH (school only offers history APs for nonseniors and has no science APs)

ECs:
NOSB - First in nation, (captain possible this year in all of these activities)
Science Olympiad - 2nd in state
NSB
Math Team - 1st in division, top scoring junior
FPS - 1st in state last year (conflicting schedule with competition date this year)
Swim Team
Environmental Club

Other:
BSA - Eagle Scout, ASPL, JASM
Summer @ Brown (waste of time and money)
Brown book award (perhaps to make up for my wasted time and money)
2 summers volunteering in proteomics lab
Qualified for AME
Community service at food bank and soup kitchen
Going to bring Biology Olympiad to my school for this coming year

Also, I think I will describe what my Eagle project was in my application. I redid a few rooms at a living center for mothers overcoming substance abuses and their children. I painted, got furniture, over 800 childrens books, and 4 computers with extra equipment including educational software. This was to give these kids a chance to gain experience with computers (which they had no domestic contact with) and make learning supplies available to them.

For Brown specifically: I work in a Brown-affiliated lab under a Brown professor and he has already written me a nice rec.

Hoping that national championship, research in lab, and the fact my school system had to protest in order to keep from losing ALL school activities will be adding factors.

I know I have no tipping factors as far as diversity, legacy, athlete, etc. but what schools do you think I could get in now? what are my weak points? and what else could help me other than retaking my SAT IIs?

Thanks.

"FPS - 1st in state last year (conflicting schedule with competition date this year)"

Woot! You're the first other FPSer I've seen on CC. What state are you from? Did you ever go to IC? Also, for SO, did you make nationals? Those two would be the strongest points of your ECs. Your stats are all great except for your SAT II scores.

Harvard EA - reach
MIT - reach
Brown - slight reach
Cornell - slight reach
Tufts - match
BU - match
WUSTL - match

What was your AMC 12 score? That is important for MIT. If it is ridiculously good then it will really help.

Yeah, I've been to the IC twice but I've never placed there and I've been to SO nationals only once. Those are solid ECs but NOSB is definitely the strongest point I would think since my team won the national championship. Oh, and I'm from Rhode Island.

Thanks for your input.

My AMC score wasn't anything to tell them about. I think I got the minimum score for an honorable mention or something like that.

Well MIT has a spot for AIME and AMC 12/10 on their app so you are going to have to tell them. Anything good enough to qualify for the AIME (100 or over) is already a really good score to be proud of and will impress MIT. Definitely include IC and Nationals on your app somewhere. I think MIT will like SO stuff too. What is NOSB?

National Ocean Sciences Bowl. It's like Science Bowl with a slightly altered format and run by NOAA instead of the DOE. A lot of people have never heard of it because its only in coastal states but its actually pretty competitive.

Hmm...I wasn't sure if just qualifying would do much since I've seen people posting around here with scores wayyy higher than mine, lol.

Yeah, definitely use that NOSB thing then because that will be a major hook since you won nationals. I think actually you have a really good chance at MIT because of SO, FPS, NOSB, and solid other stats, as long as you raise bio and math 2c.

Yeah I don't know what was with that. I think it's just that my school has a really slow math curriculum and I hadn't learned a lot of the pre-cal topics at the time. I'm really gonna try and work on that.

Hmm, I always thought that MIT would be my least chance because of my lack of a technology background. That's interesting to know though, thanks.

Bumpity bump bump

Certainly better than averge chance at all. You should be in at Brown with your stats and the letter and all schools below there. Harvard and MIT you're in the lottery pool with all the other qualifieds.

One last bump, then you I'll leave my thread to die.

Harvard - Reach
MIT - Slight reach
Brown - Match
Cornell - Slight reach
Tufts - Match
WUSTL - Match
BU - Safety

I did FPS last year. But that was only because my friends were officers and the club wasn't attracting many people. Most of the time I just chilled with other friends who were forced to come :P. Our main team went to states two years ago.

Also, our middle school won SO nationals two (or three?) years in a row now. But our high school team sucks. Hehe.

Hey Everyone

I've brought up my low Bio/Math 2 SAT II scores both up to 800s.

Does this change my changes a ton? Any input on my chances as a whole are welcome!

Oh, and my official class rank is 4/443

Thanks again everyone.

I'm a FPSer too! HAHA!
I'm at BU..it was my safety school, but I go here practically for free.

Plus, you can get a good education anywhere...it depends on what YOU do with it.

Cause BU is kicking my butt (especially the premed courses!)

assuming you do a decent enough job on the essays/interview, you have a fairly good shot at brown. harvard and mit are reaches, BU is a safety, the rest are matches.

good job on the sat ii's :)

Hey, just thought I'd add that I do FSP as well!
