Applying to (Economics)
EA: University of Chicago, Boston College
Regular Decision
Harvard MIT UPENN Dartmouth
UVA Northwestern NYU-Stern Lehigh(legacy) BU

really hoping to getting in to u of chicago (EA)
then i'll only apply to harvard mit upenn and dartmouth for RD

comments please... along w/ my chances at the schools that im applying to
i know that my ECs arent stellar and doesnt have an exceptional stats comparing to the average applicants of top-notch schools... however, my hook is my patent and the fact that im an international student who only lived in the states for 3yrs (actually 5, if u include the 2yrs that i lived when i was 5)

thanks in advance

Oh.. also
does anyone know some schools that offer Econometrics
i know that most grad schools offer it... but id like to pursue econometrics as an undergrad

And does anyone know what the acceptance rate of UofChicago EA is?

It's pretty high, but their applicant pool is known to be extremely self-selecting. In other words, their acceptance rate is high (it's around 40% I think) because only qualified candidates bother applying to U of C. Also, if you want to apply there, you should know that the application essays play an extremely large role in your chances at U of C.

I think your all-around chances are pretty darn good, but not guaranteed by any means. I could see you admitted to Harvard, but would also not be terribly surprised if they waitlist or reject you. That just happens to be the fate of most applicants, even those as qualified as yourself.

Just out of curiosity, what did you patent?

you have the qualifications, and i am sure you know that. they key for you will be in your essays & EC's.

While you have an impressive list of EC's, nothing seems to stand out as something truly unique. If you can find something on there that is, or you can present it in a light such that you are portrayed as a unique person, that will help you considerably.

PS Don't be hurt by my use of "unique"...you are a phenomenal student with imprresive qualifications. Stating that you have a good chance at being seen as "unique" among Harvard applicants is something to be proud of.

nobody is guaranteed admissions into harvard or any ivy. it's just so selective and weird.

your chances are pretty good, though. aren't you going to take AP micro or macro economics? that would look good if you're planning on majoring business.

your standardized scores are awesome! i can see you becoming a NMS Finalist. 2300 is very excellent. i don't know hwat your GPA thing means. i go to a school were it's on a 4.0 scale. if you could maybe give ma what your GPA would be on a 4.0 scale, that would help.

MAKE YOUR ESSAYS GOOD AS SLICED BREAD!

Focus on finding what makes you you, not just a list of achievements. Good luck!

To JimmyEatWorld711
I haven't really told anyone about my patent... It pertains to e-business...
Its a really complex thing...extremely hard to explain... i got the patent with the help of my dad and through his company...(not that he helped me with the idea, he just helped me get the patent)
anyway, i think itll help me since it is relevant to what im intending to do

to magic

id definitely like to take ap macro or micro... unfortunately my school doesnt have an ap economics class... although it does have a regular economics class which i am going to take...

do u think i should self-study and take the ap exam at the end of the year?? (i honestly dont intend to get exempted from any economics course; is it worth taking it??)

what's Operation Smile?

to sr6622

im pretty sure that it is a nation-wide organization
its basically a club that raises money to support doctors who operate kids with facial deformity

Good shot at MIT, especially if your patent interests them. Chicago loves that kind of thing too, chances very strong there. Good shot at all actually until we get to Harvard. Again, if the patent interests them that could be a hook, otherwise you're another qualified lottery candidate.

how did u take the new psat as a sophmore and junior? that's not possible. The new psat only came out in october of 2004. and it has been only 8 months since. dont understand that. but still u have a good chance.

magic:
sliced bread is not that good.

Just read the part where it says your Dad's company owns the patent. It makes no sense. Why would anyone in your position hand over a patent to a company who then own the rights and future profits? Really makes it seem like it's not your patent.

to zagat
i never said that my dad's company owns the patent...
i got some help from the people at my dad's company to get a patent
im not familiar w/ the process so i just got some help from the "experts"
the patent is under my name and it became an international patent couple months ago

to grad'06

i think u misunderstood...
im currently a junior and i did take the new psat in october 2004

I'm glad. As long as your's is the only name on the patent and no professionals or company was involved, the schools should be impressed.

to magic

my gpa on a 4.0 scale would be 3.8~4.0/4.0 unweighted and 4.4~4.7/4.0 weighted
