Chances: Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Penn, Chicago, Duke

Hello, I am a senior from Wake County and I've applied to:
Penn
Chicago
Harvard
Stanford
Princeton
Duke

My grades and such are as follow:
Unweighted GPA: 3.958/4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.93
13 AP Classes 12 Honors Classes once Senior year is finished
Rank: 12/535

SAT: 800 Math 740 Reading 740 Writing
SAT II: 800 Math II 780 Chemistry 770 US History

AP Exams: All 5s on:
AP Calc BC (and AB subscore)
AP Chemistry
AP English III
AP Government and Politics
AP Us History
AP Environmental

My one hiccup is a B in AP English III Junior year

Senior year grades: All As first semester

Extracurriculars (average, if that)
Varsity Tennis three years
Club Soccer
Club Volleyball
Key Club
Debate Club Advisor
National Honor Society
Volunteering (Food bank, tutoring, etc)
Employment (part time at local tutoring center)

Awards:
National Merit Semifinalist (Should be finalist once that comes back as I didn't have any glaring problems with the application)
AP Scholar with Distinction
AP State Scholar
Scholar Athlete

Unfortunately, I do not have many leadership positions among these endeavors.

Recommendations were good, essays were satisfactory I'll say

I applied to Harvard, Princeton and Stanford more as "why not" schools, do not reasonably expect to get in. Note: Had my Princeton interview today, went well, however I don't think these carry much weight on admissions (was informal).

On seeing past admissions, I believe at the very least my grades and scores are enough for Penn/Chicago/Duke so I was just wondering about these three mainly. I am not expecting to be overqualified or anything, I just wanted to know if I had a reasonable chance at these places.

Note: I am applying to Duke in-state and have just been accepted to Chapel Hill

Wow, your grades are phenomenal. I feel like you would have a great chance to get into all these colleges. Your E/C’s are great but lacking a unique basis. Remember many of these schools have accepted and denied people just like you, but still you have a great chance. Just have faith and believe in yourself. Good Luck!

Awesome application! Definitely doesn’t have anything to pull you out of consideration. You should definitely receive acceptances from a number of the schools you listed. Question though: How can you be a State AP Scholar with only six AP scores?

I apologize, it might have been a Regional Scholar Award. Actually, after my interview with the local Princeton alumni, I believe I am quickly becoming convinced to consider that as an option. I honestly don’t think I have a shot though sadly enough.

On another note, how are my chances for Duke? I’ve heard they like “special” applicants but I’m not sure if I qualify with my E/Cs

Congratulations, you are officially a freak of human nature. And you probably still won’t get into Harvard. Good luck on your Duke endeavor, you’ll probably be fine there.

Your scores are all excellent, however, I’m sorry to say nothing else really stands out on your application. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford all could really have their pick of students with top scores; sometimes what matters most is what else you can do. I think they’re probably all mid-reaches, as they are with almost everyone. Penn might be a low reach. You’ve got a good shot at Duke and Chicago though C:

i agree with above. Chicago and Duke are good, but those top top top schools are never positive. you do have a good chance
chance me please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1075778-please-chance-me-hyps-washu-mit.html</a></p>

You ahve a good shot at Duke and Chicago … Upenn is a low reach while the others reaches like they are for everyone applying…I think you will make it into atleast one of your 4 reaches

Chance back at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1060886-chance-hopeful-will-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

Thanks guys, the best I was thinking was that they’d all be mid-high reaches, but I suppose I was selling myself short. I’d chance back, but as you see, I don’t seem to know even my own chances >.<

Penn - low reach
Chicago - low reach/high match
Harvard - reach
Stanford - reach
Princeton - reach
Duke - low reach/high match

As sad as this sounds, you’re the average applicant to top schools. That’s not to say that you’re average in any way on an absolute scale, but you won’t really stand out in the pool of applicants at these schools. The difference is in the essays, and if you only think yours were satisfactory, you definitely won’t stand out.

Harvard - high reach; it’s Harvard
Stanford - high reach; it’s Stanford
Princeton - high reach; it’s Princeton
Penn - reach if CAS, high reach if Wharton/SEAS/Nursing/dual degree
Chicago - high reach; they seem to like extremely studious and hard-working yet quirky kids, and I have no idea if you fit that or not
Duke - low reach

I see Keasbey, I believe you are probably right. However, I wasn’t sure if I’d even meet “average” for HPSY and such. And yes, Wharton for Penn.

Thank you all, you’re helping me quite a bit.

You’re application is as good as any I’ve seen. Congrats on your high school success. Like everyone else said though, all of the schools will be high/low reaches just because of their selectivity. I think you’ll get into at least 2 though. Good luck.

What would you guys say the percentages are for me at each of these places? I’m not really familiar with the “reach” terminology, so I can only speculate as to how that breaks down for me. This just goes to show how neurotic I really am, I considered doing a statistical chart with theoretical probabilities of getting into at least one.

above average in terms of grade, ordinary in terms of extracurriculars. I would venture to guess for fun (which is totally subjective and is not to be taken seriously!) that you’ll be admitted to UChicago, most likely waitlisted or rejected at HYPS with possibly one acceptance from one of the four. no idea about Duke and UPenn.

*I believe at the very least my grades and scores are enough for Penn/Chicago/Duke so I was just wondering about these three mainly. I am not expecting to be overqualified or anything, I just wanted to know if I had a reasonable chance at these places. *

you certainly have a reasonable chance at these schools. UPenn tends to have its own standards for admissions: I know people attending Harvard who were waitlisted at Penn, so the school is not any easier to get into.

Hazel, from what I understand, Duke is roughly as selective as Chicago, but I think my in state status helps me a little. I’ve heard that Duke is trying to get more instate kids to attend as they’ve gotten increasing applicants from California and New York each year (both states having more applicants than North Carolina itself).

There were some extracurriculars I didn’t list (mainly just volunteering and some clubs) but I agree that is likely the section of my application that is lacking. I think with a decent (read: as much as decent really means at HPSY) chance at the Ivies, I’ve got a reasonable possibility to get into at least one of these schools?

Soft bump.

New Info: Mid year grades:
Honors Research and Methods - A
Honors Latin 2 - A
AP Psychology - A
Ap Statistics - A

Another update:
I was invited to the Honors College at Chapel Hill, I don’t know how difficult the process is, but I think they only invite a few hundred for their freshman year. I believe most of our top ten ranked students did not get an invite. Does this seem like a good gauge on the strength of my application, or does anyone know if the Honors College is decided more on a student by student basis (my dad was a graduate for example).

You have an quite a strong application; it should be enough for Duke, and could probably get you into Chicago with a bit of luck. However unless you have a very strong “hook”, you don’t have that great chances of getting into HYPS.

And unless you get accepted into Duke, I would advise you to go into Chapel Hill’s honors program.
