You def. show a lot of potential at politics. But to have a strong shot at Harvard, you need to do even more in the ec's arena. If you are going to get accepted to Harvard, its going to be because of your ec's, not because of your SAT score. So work a little on improving it, like possibly 100-200 points. But other than that, forget about it. Now, in terms of ec's, I have a few ideas for you. Politics is all about leadership and appealing to people. So start up a new organization or lead an organzation that has already started up. One GREAT idea for you is to start an organization that educates kids about politics. Teenagers these days have a very low turnout rate compared to adults and senior citizens. So educate them and make it your goal to raise the turnout rate of teenagers in your community or state. Leadership and leadership potential is VERY VERY important for someone entering politics. And your leadership cant only come from school related activities. They want to see how you can lead the public and your community. The bigger the community you can lead, the better it will look to the admissions committee. Don't worry, your SAT wont kill you. But you HAVE to make it up with AMAZING Ec's. I'm in your same boat, so I would know.

I wanna start such an organisation. Anybody interested in joining?

If you do not get into harvard GeorgeS then I dont think anyone can

GPA is very high obviously. does not correlate with SAT at all.. lol. i bet theyre gonna check up on your app//verify some stuff.

its a toss-up. I see no hooks.

Wasn't Tom Coburn the guy who wanted abortion doctors put to death?

these days, you can't even guesstimate who might get into an elite school -- it's THAT arbitrary. a year ago, a friend of mine got accepted to Harvard and Berkeley, but got rejected by Princeton and Stanford. I'm sure if she had posted her stats here, everyone would have said the same thing, that she had a shot at all of those schools. but, what good is that? you really just have to wait and see.

aside from an impeccable gpa and test scores, you really need to show that you're passionate about something in particular. i mean, it's great to show that you're involved in a ton of clubs...just narrow it down accordingly. you'll be ok.

Guys I really appreciate you replying to my thread. All of this info has been really helpful to me. The reason why I havn't responded in a week was that I got to go to Oklahoma Boys State (very big deal in my state). I was elected mayor of my city and recieved the "citizen of the day" award. Every city has about 60 citizens and there are a total of 12 cities.

First off: "I have a question. How can you become editor of the newspaper in 9th grade? You only participated for one year. That seems kind of suspicious."

This is very strange. You see, where I live our Jr. High building holds the grades 7-9 and our high school building holds the grades 10-12. I was on the newspaper staff in 8th grade and became editor in 9th grade for my Jr. High building (even though I was a Freshman). I had a lot of fun in newspaper (especially the 'editorial' section I created), but I knew it wasn't for me because I felt my job was to be opinionated and persuade people not present facts and stand on the side line.

Second: "in terms of ec's, I have a few ideas for you. "

This is a great idea. It is going to be hard, however, as it is not an election year. Do you know any resources I could check up on concerning the starting up of a political organization?

"Wasn't Tom Coburn the guy who wanted abortion doctors put to death?"

No. Tom Coburn is the guy who is so principled he has term-limited HIMSELF in offices he has held in the past. He is also the most fiscal responsible conservative I've ever dealt with. This man simply won't budge. If it isn't needed, he refuses to vote for it (no matter what the political repercussions are). I admit Dr. Coburn has said some politically unsoothing comments in his day, but the people of Oklahoma don't seem to care as much about what he says as they do what he does (or in the case of government activity, what he refuses to do). A kind of interesting fact, however, is that his former opponent (Brad Carson) is now teaching political science at Harvard, and although I disagree with his blatant obsession for the establishment of intrusive government in the lives of Oklahomans, I respect his intelligence and work ethics very much. He is very young and his political "career" (I don't consider politics a career in the traditional sense) is very impressive.

BTW, I just bought grammatix and am beginning to take more practice tests. I am beginning to see my SAT scores improve by the day. I really thinking a 200 point increase is feasable come next year. Again, thanks to those who have replied to my post and I look forward any more good information/comments anyone else has to offer.

bump .,

OTHER (maybe the most important):

I was accepted to the Telluride Association Summer Program for this summer. They accept about 9% of applicants each year, and it's sometimes seen as the humanities version of RSI. It's for six weeks, completely free, and one of the most prestigious summer programs in the country. Teachers and profs generally like me, so I'll probably be able to get a *****in' recommendation letter from my TASP prof, who's one of the leaders in his field.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

audio, do you know Isaac Freeman?

OSSM student? Surely that helps

yeah isaac's awesome!

OSSM is fine for those interested in math and science. For me, on the other hand, it is not the peice of cake I'd wish it to be. Audio, by the way, you've got a lot better shot at any Ivy than I do. To get more comments you might want to just go ahead and start another thread though, as this one I'd wish to stay focussed on yours truly (lol).

So you're going to be a senior next year? So am I. I got a 2060 on the SAT and am definitely looking to improve it. I also agree with what someone else said about playing sports. But I am not really sure how much good it will do you since you only have a year left.

Anyways, all the best.

I agree with GeorgeS, Audiophile88 is definitely on track. I'd be surprised if you didn't get into your top colleges and universities.
