Chances: Hotchkiss, Andover, Exeter, Deerfield

First off, hello everybody and hope we're all having a great day!
I'm a 9th grader at the International School of Beijing (China), applying for hotchkiss, andover, exeter, and deerfield sophomore year. Can you guys help me figure out my chances of acceptance? Thanks!

Grades:
A+ in publication design or yearbook, As in biology, asian studies, theater, chinese, math, A- in PE (I have a broken arm) and English

SSAT: 93 percentile, 99 in verbal, 90 in math (disgraceful for asian), and 83% for verbal

EC:
Piano (11 years): All beijing #3 back in 7th grade, played in Simply Piano, schools extremely selective piano concert, for 6th and 7th grade, compose some songs. Problem is I haven't played since I broke my arm, and that was way back when so I can't really submit a CD.
Programming (2 years): Did two courses in Center for Talented Youth (Johns Hopkins University) in C++, one in Java. Design study programs and games in spare time (it's fun!), nothing big though
Model United Nations (2 years): Travel team to Malaysia last year and Hague, this year. The hague conference is the largest MUN conference in the world, extremely selective.
Math (loooong time): Passed Precalculus in 7th grade on CTY, member of school's math olympiad team, captain of school's South East Asia Mathematics Competition team.
Yearbook (3 years): Editor in chief in middle school, just a staff member in high school.
Volunteer (1 year): Work as a guide at the National Museum of Science and Technology (did when I wrote the application, anyways)
Newspaper writing (1 year): I write for the local newspaper, which is in Chinese (again, I did when I wrote the application. Dropped it now)
Swim team (7 years)
Debate: Just started

Good essays

Really good interviews

Recommendations:
A bit worried here. I'm really cool with most of my teachers, but my english teacher hates me for reasons unknown, so that recommendation is going to die painfully. Really good EC by my yearbook/computer teacher, should be a good one by my math teacher.

My ECs don't have many prizes or stuff in them because middle/high school competitions in China are rare. Also, our school won't allow us to skip levels, so even though I passed precalc two years ago, I'm stuck in friggin advanced geometry, and our school doesn't offer honors, advanced anything except in math, and again, we can't skip. Never applied for any of these schools before, what do we all think? Thanks again!

hello, im from ISB too =) but i’m in eighth grade.

your grades are good. you might want to retake ssats because i’m sure you can get your math section up (790-800), and it could raise your percentile to something like 97-99th percentile. your EC’s look very good, especially the piano part, and swim team.

you have a good chance, but because there are so many asian applicants (mainly chinese and korean), it’s really hard to stand out. and the schools only accept one or two asian students.

anyways it seems like you’re done with most of your application, so you should probably have a good feeling whether or not you might be going to those schools… where did you have your interviews? and what do you mean by good essays? i think those two parts are the most important.

I can still retake the SSATs?

yeah you can schedule for the january 8th test, they will still accept your scores. but beijing probably ran out of test sites already, so you might have to take the test somewhere else.

Honestly, once your above 90ish SSAT it probably doesn’t matter to the schools because of the fact that the difference between a 99% and a 90% is only one or two questions

ISB!!! LOL. I almost went there. ;)

I’m applying to all the schools you are applying to except Exeter because I saw this YouTube video of Exonians dissing Phillipians and being narcissists in the Andover school campus. I would like to share it to you guys but YouTube is banned in China. … I guess those students represent only a fraction of Exonians but it was a big epiphany for me so I left my uncompleted Exeter application… undone.

ANYWAYS. Your chances should be great but you fellow ISB-ers applying! If there are too many students from the same school applying, your chances will be lowered. Just my perspective.

AND HEY. MY ENGLISH TEACHER HATES ME TOO! high fives

I think there’s a passion for math and technology apparent in your applicaiton, which is good. The model UN is good too because it shows you are humanities savvy as well, and some of these schools are slightly liberal arts inclined.

However, I would try to bump up the SSAT math. It’s definitely good for a typical applicant but to someone who has been active in advanced math and such it looks a little bit strange. It won’t be enough to raise red flags but they may not dismiss it as a fluke.

Anyway, you have a chance. Raise the SSAT math score.

I’m applying to all the schools you are applying to except Exeter because I saw this YouTube video of Exonians dissing Phillipians and being narcissists in the Andover school campus.
Well, Andover students probably do the same to Exonians…it’s this whole big rivalry on both sides. I wouldn’t decide to discontinue my application to Exeter for this reason, but it’s up to you.

have you seen the phillipian mock of the exonian? it’s pretty distasteful imho, but then again there’s a pretty ~intense~ rivalry. there are sour grapes at every school :P

jerryreps, you’re very smart to leave your Exeter application incomplete.
IMHO, asians stand a higher chance of acceptance to Exeter than Andover.

lolll. like ISB and WAB. dunno about your grade vivsters, but there was a pretty big party when we beat their ass 50-8 in jv rugby.
Thanks for the replies everybody, but how qualified are the applicants I’m up against? I mean, to me, most of my app looks pretty…y’know, normal. What do you guys think?

and jerryyeps, 4 people from our school got accepted to andover last year from the same grade (not mine, thank god). So I dunno, but there are only 4 people applying this year from our grade. Hope they take the same amount. :D

@ flash9k

I thought only around a dozen of students are from China. So almost 50% of them are from ISB? That’s amazing.

@ jerryeps

i heard from a chinese local school friend that around 10000 (yes that’s four zero’s) students are applying to peddie. not sure about other schools.

but yeah, that’s a lot.

^
WHAT? Ten thousand students? …

@flash9k
Are you M/F? I’m pretty rare here in CC because I’m one of the few male International applicants applying for the tenth grade.

male, chinese canadian. No, sorry, you’re not asking me out.
Yeah, 4. One of them is a good friend, and I know the other three a little. The one that I know is a genius.
Vivsters, there is no possible way that’s true. sorry.

Hey flash, we had a pretty big damn party when our varsity boys and girls volleyball whooped your asses at Beijing Challenge ;)

yeah well considering 230000 students from china applied to university last year…

but i’m not entirely sure. it’s just a rumor.

@ flash9k

We have a big chance of being roommates. A really really really really big chance.

let’s put that aside until we both get accepted, hmk? ;)
