-I am hoping to find a research mentor for this semester and next year (11,12)
-Church Lectoring (this is only like 1x a month, but the audience I'm lectoring to is HUGE)
-Piano (8 years)

Jobs:
I might work at the Farmer's Market this summer?
I'm applying for work at the NIH for Neuroscience (summer)
All of these would be in the summer...no time during the year

Intended Major: Neuroscience. I'm also interested in Biomedical engineering, Artificial Intelligence

13/14 total Honors/AP courses by the end of high school

Awards: AP scholar with distinction (will get this), Science Olympiad medals, Robotics (won regionals and nationals), competed at State level in sports, might be recruited (5:06 mile time, might get sub-5 this year), competing in Brain Bee this month, competing in Science Bowl soon, founded a team at our school, starting a school science fair, I might do the regional science fair

In college I want to run, and I'm interested in neuroscience research and perhaps writing for a student publication

Penn seems like a great school!

You’re great, neon. You’ll be a very competitive candidate for any school to which you apply. Your athletic talents will be a big plus. A 5:06 mile is about a 4:40 1500. Penn had only four girls run that fast outdoors, and only one girl go under 5:00 minutes in the indoor mile. You should contact the Penn coach ASAP. If you catch his or her eye, you could have an even better chance. Many athletes with your gifts parlay their talents into getting into programs like Wharton. Also be sure to get to know your regional representative. If you can, meet him or her and let them know about your interest in Penn. Good luck!

I’m impressed. I’d give you a really good shot, especially with that athletic ability - I hope it’s in your application. What’s your class rank? Do you have any competition for spots at Penn within your class?

@HapaGirl: Thanks! I’m a junior right now, so w/track season coming up, I’m going to see if I can possibly get that mile time even lower before I fill out the recruiting form…

@biomajor5: I am not sure what my rank is, since my school only gives deciles (top 10%). I’ll include track in my app…except I will probably focus more on robotics, as track is great and I know that I have talent, but it has definitely not been the main focus of my hs years. I’m sure I will have some competition from other people at my school…but I feel that I have accomplished more in terms of ECs in comparison (not to sound pretentious, but I have put many hours into, for ex., founding the Science team.)

anyone else? would applying to a science program at Penn over summer help? (I’m interested in the biomedical research program)

I worked at Penn the summers before in labs. It definitely helped. Recommendations, experiences, insights about Penn.

@biomajor5: Which lab? (I’m not going to copy you, I was just wondering which labs offer positions to hs students).

Did you have to adopt a Penn residence for the research/or were you within commute distance?

If I am doing a summer program at Penn, do you think I could work in a lab at the same time?
