Chances? (If any)

Hi,

International student from Czech Republic would like to know his chance :]
Grade average from HS :1,18 (Our scale of grades in Czech Republic is 1-5 . 1=the best, like A 5=worst,like F)
We dont have class ranking, but I should be in top five percent - graduation year / in top ten percent ( all HS years )
Graduation grades average = 1 (We have to took exams from chosen classes for graduation Scale of grades = again 1-5 )

TOEFL 110 / 120

SAT 2230
CR 740
M 800
W 690

SAT Subject ( W.History ) - 780 ( Math.II ) - 800 (German lang. ) - 750

I was one year in the US as Rotary Exchange student:
Taken classes (1st semester / 2nd semester) : AP Calc - (B/A) , AP Stats - (A,A) , AP Euro History - (A,A) , US History - (A,A) , (Fall & Winter Sports - A / Criminal Justice - A ) , ( Composition - B / Literature - A )
Also passed AP exams from my AP classes
Member of Interact, Soccer ( won the conference ) , Skiing, Tennis ( Varsity )

During study in Czech Republic :
Activities back in Czech Rep. Soccer, Tennis (but no bigger successes), 2nd place State Softball tournament , Downhill skiing ( but again, no big wins )
1st, 2nd and 6th in Math contests in our Division, County whatever... (dont know jow to call it)
Member of interact
Several times member of politician simulations
Pretty good position in some other Math, Physic, Language ( Eng and German ) , Creative writing contests, but didnt win anything and all of these are competitions for our county, division etc. , not state competitions

I hope in pretty good Essay.
Last think, Czech Republic usually doesnt send lot of students to US, if it helps...

You can see that activities are pretty weak, but probably most of people from my country would be quite similar, cause it is just how it works there.

What else could decrease or improve my chances?

Thank you for advice :]

Come on guys, help me out :]

If you need financial aid it might hurt you because Columbia is need aware for internationals. Otherwise I think you look good. Don’t worry so much about how you compare to American students and international students from countries like Canada, Columbia will realize that you don’t have same opportunities. Good Luck! I applied too, wish I had SAT scores like yours, but I’m taking it over again, so maybe I’ll improve. Hope to see you next year :)

2230 is a nice score on the SAT for sure, but speaking for myself and probably much else of CC, I can’t say how a 1.18 stacks against a 4.0, or what a 110 on the TOEFL means. I can say that I’ve heard that international applicants make up a far more competitive pool than domestic.

I think you have good chances! FA can hurt, though :/

Btw, it seems like every intl student has better stats than mine (and i’m intl too :s)

Average would be probably 3.82 on american scale, but there is very few of students with straight As (and 4.0 average) , because high school is more difficult in CR. Also my high school is one of the best ones around ( when I was applying there, there was only about 20 percent accepted students, whereas 80 percent declined).

What hurts is my average of grades first years on HS. Last two years I went with the best possible GPA 1.0 (or 4.0 on american scale) , and my graduation grades in last year of high school ( because we have to take exams to graduate) were also all As ( the best possible average)

Unfortunately I am gonna apply for financial aid.
I am willing to take a loan, but dont think that it would cover full cost

TOEFL is language test for international students. Maximum is 120 points, but 100+ should be enough even for ivies, at least i heard so

I didn’t send TOEFL score to columbia, since I took 690 on the CR section (they say they don’t need it if you take 650+). What do you think?

it seems you have a good chance :)

AlmaIlaria : That should be ok, I am just that kind of guy who likes to send more better than less.
Do you have your thread in here on CC?

nope, i’m so sorry i’m writing on yours…actually i don’t like chances thread, they make me scared (competitive pool)…but you have good chances, so that’s not your point probably :)

No, thats ok i didnt mean it. I just asked for your chances thread, cause wanted to check it :]

nope, no chance thread. btw, i’m from italy, do you want to add me on msn or skype so we can talk?
