Chances...I'm lame

white, new jersey, will be candidate for finaid.
small private school (90 kids), fairly competitive
sends a lot/most kids to elite colleges

gpa ~ 3.8 weighted... i kind of messed up freshman and sophomore year
have no clue what my class rank is, probably between 2nd and 3rd decile.
sats- CR 770, M 590, W 750
sat 2s- US History- 760, Lit 770, math 1- 630
APs- four classes so far, three more this year, plus a couple of honors classes

varsity soccer/cross country 2 years each
varsity softball 4 years
varsity wrestling 4 years
in disc golf club for four years, president for last two

not a whole lot of community service- i work at camps at my school year round and read to kindergardeners but that's about it

good essays/good recs, not the most amazing ones they've ever seen but they're not bad.

i feel like my clubs and community involvement (or lack thereof) are going to be crutches... exactly how important are they for admission? fwiw i've visited and toured, and will be interviewing sometime later on.

correction- 90 kids in my class, not entire school

Do you plan to continue athletics in college? Smith is by no means a "jock" school but they do like to fill out their teams.

My initial impression of your chances is "reasonably good but not a slam dunk." Iow, you're in the region where the value of a "chances" thread is pretty useless.

Officially, the most important part of your applicaiton (they'll probably tell you this in your interview) is your transcript. You seem to be within range on grades and APs, honors etc. I think the fact that you do athletics is interesting and it may balance out the fact that you aren't florence nightingale.

If you really want Smith, applying EDII (depending on how much finaid you need) would boost your chances.

"I think the fact that you do athletics is interesting and it may balance out the fact that you aren't Florence Nightingale."

SmithieandProud, I've been working in care (I've got First Aid, CPR, unlimited patience & 10 hospitals under my belt) for 3 years (it was my anniversary last week!). How do you think I could play this card in my application?

I've tried writing essays about it, but it's not exactly flowing. I will definately apply for the RA position, once it's open to me. Also, I'm 22, international, returning to education from full time employment, minging SAT's, great references, continued improvement in school grades, do you think I have a chance there?

well, i would definitely put down your skills and work experience on your application, and keep trying with that essay, it's a more interesting topic than most could write.

What I meant by the florence nightingale comment mostly was that the OP shouldn't worry too much about not having a ton of community service since she clearly was busy with sports, so they probably wouldn't judge her too harshly (though keep in mind that i'm not an admissions officer, just someone who's been there and done that).
