Chances.....im that desperate

chances....sorry if this is a little long

Background:

-Japanese/Jewish/German white male
-Northern Virginia

High School:

-Sends quite a number of kids to Ivies, etc. and like 20-30 for UVA
-extremely competitive
-*****y grading scale (all people in fairfax county hate it):
94-100 = A, 93-90 = B+, 89-84 B, 83-80 C+, etc.
4.0 = A, 3.5 = B+, etc. and add 0.5 for AP

Academics:

-3.94/4.00 UW GPA, 4.14 W GPA
-Junior Year Classes: AP Statistics, APUSH, AP English Language, Precalculus Honors, German 4, Computer Science, Physics (if you took APUSH, you had to take AP English and vice-versa in junior year)
-Senior Year Classes: AP German, AP Biology, AP Calculus BC, AP Government, English 12, Guidance Office Assistant (hopefully to become AP Statistics TA), Ceramics and Sculpture
- no class rank, but hopefully top 10 out of 600

Scores:

-SAT: 710 CR, 740 Math, 720 Writing (9 for essay), 2170 total
-PSAT: 202 (most likely commended)
-SAT II: 800 US History, 760 Math II (retook in June)
-AP (predicted): 4-5 for Statistics, 5 for US History, 3-4 for English

EC:

Swimming: have been swimming for ten years, about 20 hours per week (year-round), club, high school(plan to be captain next year) and summer league, will probably not be recruited but still want to swim in college, finaled in Districts all high school years, qualified for Regionals this year

Kumon: after-school math-enrichment program, do worksheets at home basically and then bring them to a center, helped me A LOT in math, have been in it for seven years

German Honor Society

Summer:

Volunteered for small political firm in summer '05 and '06

Working at Kumon this summer (9 hrs/week?)

Hopefully volunteer for political campaign

Swimming more and more (maybe like 30 hrs/week over summer)

Awards:
- Outstanding Student in Geometry (9th grade, school-wide)
- Outstanding Student in Algebra 2 Honors (10th grade, school-wide)
- Outstanding Student in AP Statistics (11th grade, school-wide)
- Outstanding Student in Precalculus Honors (11th grade, school-wide)

- Scholar Athlete (9th, 10th, 11th, school-wide)

Legacies:

Columbia: Brother (undergrad)
Harvard: father, aunt, grandfather, some more (all undergrad)
Stanford: Brother (engineering school)

Schools:

Pomona College, Columbia, Stanford, UC Berkeley (all top choices), Harvard, UMichigan, UVA (in-state), UC Santa Cruz (safety), George Mason (safety), Brown, Georgetown, Claremont McKenna

Possible Majors: Statistics, History, Political Science, International Relations, Math

I think I'm aiming a littttle high here. But I'm hoping that my dedication to swimming can overshadow my lack of EC's.

Chances?

Columbia and Stanford aren't technically legacies. UVA you'll probably get just because you're from VA. But Brown/Columbia/Georgetown are all tossups. You MIGHT have a bit of help at Harvard with that legacy.

UMich, GMU, and UC Santa Cruz are good safeties. And UMich is probably a good match.

Your numbers are fine. What you need to do is convince someone that you deserve to go to the tougher schools. And Stanford is a killer out of state. I know a kid who had a four generation legacy, had a brother attending, amazing ECs, and great scores who was straight up rejected this year. And another girl I know who was accepted early to Harvard was waitlisted.

CMC cares more about SATs and ecs than gpa... and they just admitted the lowest out of any LAC (16%)... SATs are fine but ECs seem kind of lacking... maybe high match/low reach

ivies are all crapshoots... no matter what... my friend who had a 3.9uw 2200 SAT pres of class and went to africa to track elephant movement didnt get into any ivy, so really youre just rollin the dice

thanks for all the responses

some questions:
-should i take SAT or ACT again??
-why is stanford harder out of state? i thought only public schools are in-state/OOS
-can anyone tell me about pomona since that is kinda my top choice now?
-is berkeley literally impossible for OOS?

you jacked my title, lol, jk... but im more desperate then you so chance me?

ur gpa is great considerin the horrible grading scale.....see if u can raise ur sat sores a little becasue they are average your top choices like columbia but overall your chances are great for most of the schools you are applying to like UVA, and mihigan and u should get accepted into at least one of the ivies u r applyin to

well got 760 again on SAT II Math II....
but thanks for all the responses

lol 760 is really good!
id say

Columbia- reach
Harvard- far reach
Pomona College -slight reach
Brown- slight reach
Georgetown- slight reach
UMichigan- match
Claremont McKenna- match
UVA (in-state)- match/ almost safety
UC Santa Cruz (safety), George Mason (safety)

i think you have a good list. your chances at harvard and stanford are not that great, but if u have legacy and a great essay you might get lucky. make sure you like your safeties and match schools, anything can happen. good luck!
