Chances, in Brief

This is my second chance thread, so I'll keep it brief. I'm posting it again because there have been a few changes since the last time I posted one, and now that I'm more familiar with applications and exactly what they ask for, I thought it couldn't hurt (if anybody is kind enough to reply, that is haha).

It seems to me that my major weakness is my GPA. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do about that now...I just wish I cared more about academics in the first half of high school, but at least I learned my lesson.

South Florida Public High School
3.3 Unweighted GPA
3.6 Weighted HPA

1390 on SATs (third attempt)
740 Reading
650 Math
780 Writing

31 on ACTs (only attempt)
29 English
27 Mathematics
34 Reading
32 Science

SAT Subjects:
Literature: 700
Math 1: 660
U.S. History: 610
Biology E: (Score not back yet)

Activities:
Editor on the School Newspaper
President/Founder of Cinematography Club (3x years)
Founding Member of Electronics Club
Working part-time at a major area newspaper

Transcript from Local University (Dual Enrolled Junior year):
Film Appreciation - A
General Psychology - A

Senior Curriculum:
AP Literature
AP Environmental Science
AP European History
AP Government / Honors Economics
Newspaper V (Honors)
TV Production III

Note: Though fairly competitive to other students in my school, my curriculum this year lacks a mathematics class. How much of a detractor is this? I took Algebra I in middle school, then Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry in high school.

Intended major: Journalism (considering double-majoring in English)

Applying to:
New York University (ED)
Boston University (College of Communication, or maybe General Studies)
University of Florida
University of Miami (EA)
Florida State University

Considering:
Boston College
Rutgers University
Northeastern University

Thanks to anybody who can chance me at any of the above schools!

Hah, I see you’re applying to a few of my choices. We have some similarities, although i’d have to say you’re a much stronger candidate than I am, heh.

Like you already pointed out, your GPA is the only weak thing about your application. What kind of courses did you take?

Regardless, i’m sure you’ll easily get into Florida State and Northeastern. Don’t even worry.

As for Miami and Florida, i’d say you’re a great candidate. I know friends who have received much lower SAT / ACT scores, and have had much less involvement in the community and still have been accepted. I wouldn’t stress so much about it, you don’t really have much to worry about.

I don’t know much about NYU, BU or Rutgers to pass judgement, so i’ll leave that to everyone else…heh…

Thanks, Cris. I appreciate the reassurance!

I’ve taken some honors classes every year, but I’ve only taken APs last year and this year. Last year was AP English Composition (4) and AP US History (3).

Also, I sent you a private message about which of those schools are your tops, just because I don’t want to risk hijacking my own thread. haha

well rutgers will probably be a definite for you especially if you’re in state…miami and florida are likely and i think bu is too. NYU i wouldn’t say it’s a reach, but maybe a semi reach/high match? northeastern you’d probably get into and bc might be a semi reach like nyu

That’s interesting about Rutgers, though I’m not in state. Either way, Rutgers is up there on my list, but not one of my top choices. I’m most interested in NYU, BU and UF.

(bump!)

Also, what are my chances at getting into the University of Central Florida? I think they have a huge applicant pool this year.

Final bump. If anybody could please chance me at UF and UM especially, it would be greatly appreciated.

Often students wishing to study Journalism look at Nortwestern University, Univ. of Missouri and the Univ of Georgia. If you want to double major in Journalism and English, Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois is a great option, although your SATs of 1390/1600 are a bit below the 1430 average. Regarding the 8 schools to which you will be applying, you are a strong candidate at all of them.

Thank you for the strong words of encouragement. Indeed, I would love to study at Northwestern, and it is still very much an option on my apply-to list, even with their intimidating freshman class profile. Thanks for the advice.

MJay,

Why don’t you tell us where you think you’ll get in with the compelling reasons why those colleges will accept you?

Sorry for the (very) late reply.

I don’t think I really understand your request, BalletGirl. Are you hinting at something sarcastically, or was that just a request for where I think I’ll get in?

The only college I can say, with any degree of confidence, that I will be accepted to is the University of Central Florida. Other than that, I can’t really make any kind of prediction.

Sorry if I’ve offended you somehow.
