<p>I've see you've posted this to many college forums. First, you apply to MIT, not to a department. Also, the stats are all on the low side for MIT, especially the SAT II math and GPA, and it is rare for an MIT applicant not to have taken calculus. However, admissions at MIT and similar first-tier schools is not based off a checklist. Encourage your kid to express himself and I'm sure he'll get into a good school.</p>

<p>While that's true, some schools do pay some attention to the projected major. However, I don't see that much here that indicates unusual ability in computer science. Summer or afterschool work experience? Volunteer work using computer skills? Can he do anything beyond the pretty simple java programs in the AP curriculum?</p>
<p>how old is this child? If he is a rising senior, this won't help him. But if he is a junior or below, success in the computing olympiad might be a good thing to try for.
