CHANCES (International from rare country; for Princeton, Harvard, Yale...)

Hello everyone,

I am applying for admission for the class of 2014. I am getting increasingly nervous about my chances, because I feel rather inconfident. I live in a underrepresented country in Western Europe.

My stats:

-SATI: 660 (M); 690 (W); 700 (CR)
-SAT II: WH: 740; Lit: 710; Bio E: 720
-Grades: average of 8.5/10; midyear report was a little lower (8 out of 10) due to illness (not explained by counselor);
This is really really high in my country, comparable to a 4.0 in a college prep system (100 procent goes to college afterwards; only 2 percent of country gets to go).
-AP: I took some AP exams as self-studied tests (only one in my country who did this prob.):
* World History: 5
* English Lang: 5
* Micro-economics: 4
I am taking more tests this year (also Calc BC, to make up for my math score).

ECs:
- Honors program at a prestigious university. Really selective. Took a lot of college courses, did research etc. 11 12
- School paper: Editor in Chief 9 10 11 12
- Private tutoring business (founder, director, 100 members): 10 11 12
- Soccer (team captain): 9 10 11 12
- Tennis: 10 11 12
- Debating (Founder): 9 10 11 12
- Lot of independent writing (philosophical essays etc. have been published) 10 11 12
- Class representative 9 10 11 12
- Political work (member of political party; been writing/campaigning a lot) 11 12
- Organiser literary program at school. 10 12
- Photography 10 11 12

Other:
- Independent Research (won prizes for my research...) in science and in economics.
- Lot of language qualifications (at C2/C1 level).
- My essays are good, or so I've heard.
- My recommendations were glowing, top of my career things, etc. Pretty personal as well (as far as I know).
- All my interviewers said my ECs/personality were outstanding, but they obviously do not know my abysmal scores.

So yeah.
My ECs are really good for my country I suppose, but my SATs are too low and my high school transcript is weird and I have lower midyear report grades (although still an A average)

I have applied to Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Chicago, Columbia, Amherst Penn, Northwestern... Some "safeties" (Applied for fin aid)...

Could anyone assess my chances?

its gonna be real hard to get into those…
u hVE a decent chance at univ of chicago.
what r ur safeties>>>??

I don’t really consider my chances at UC too high because I have applied for financial aid!
My safeties are just some smaller LACs mainly, but they are probably harder to get into than most of the other schools on my list, because they only have like 6 int. scholarships a year.

hey ive applied to princeton cornell rice duke with similar scores(sat1 2070)
satii(2350)
im international too, with fin aid…
i know our chances r slim , but hey, lets be optimistic…
wht r ur safeties?

my friend (quasiprofound username)got in with a 2150 to rollins and got brilliant fin aid…
amherst as excellent fin aid for international students too

Good luck! Your SATIIs are really good

Oh thats great about your friend! Good news actually!
I have applied to Colgate, Kenyon, Smith, Wooster, DePauw and some others! But they are still really
selective…

hmm colgate gives good fin aid…u hav a good chace there…
dont know bout the others…

Harvard-Reach
Princeton-Reach
Yale-Reach

Good Luck!

the Ivy’s are reaches for practically everyone… it’s really up to how they see your application and if you stand out… sorry, i’m not much help… but since you’ve already applied. you’re on a wing and a prayer right now

Bump, bump, bump!

Just as others have said, you look like a solid candidate, although your SAT I scores are leaning towards the low side. You definitely have a shot though, provided that your essays are great. Out of curiosity, which “C1/C2 language qualifications” have you earned? :)

Thank you!

I have a C2 in English (Cambridge certificate) and a C1 in German! Thinking about taking C1 French as well!
EDIT: Although Ill be taking 2 of these this year then (should I take French), but it sort of impossible at this point that I won’t get them (Ive listed them as pending though)

^ That’s definitely impressive! Often when people claim to speak multiple languages, they don’t actually know any of them very well, but having a language certificate at the ‘C’ level shows a lot about your proficiency - in fact, I’d argue that having one of those represents an even higher level than scoring an 800 on a language SAT II. lol.

Best of luck! :D

Really?! Thank you! I thought they were sort of negligible! haha well, that is nice.
I guess it is a lot easier for me to learn this languages, because my own language is so rare we are sort of forced too! Haha. I don’t think my C2 would be worth an 800 though, hmm…
Although it is funny that I had a 5 for AP lang, and passed C2 and still only had a mere 690 on my CR!

… I am not taking that many proficiency examinations though (I took english too). The OP looks frightingly much like me (we both took an AP, I took lit though, and somewhat similar CR scores). Hahaha. Wonder where the OP is from.

Where are you from Fledgling, an international too?

Ooh btw, I think you have quite an okay chance, OP! We have a lot of sort of similar things. Only applying
to almost completely different schools. What is your first choice? Harvard Yale or Princeton I reckon? My first choices are Harvard and Princeton.

The Ivies are all high reach for you, and most other applicants. Northwestern a match, possibly.

Ivy’s are all high reaches and I’m pretty sure no part of Western Europe is considered a URM in terms of college admissions.

If what you are saying is 100% true, you should have a very good chance at all those schools and the only thing that would make it or break is how you present yourself in your essays. Good luck!

Yes - I’m a Canadian citizen. :)

Thanks all!

Fledging: Thanks! Glad they are worth something (the language proficiency exams). I’d love to go to Canada sometime, it must be beautiful.

Fauve and Jersey: Thanks! I realise I have a very slim chance at all of them. I didn’t mean to say my country is really under represented (although it sort of is, we have like 10/20 applicants a year for the top schools, and I was the first applicant from my country at a lot of my colleges), it just isn’t as frequent as, say, India or South-Korea.

Cookiemonster: Thank you! I hope you are right! My SAT scores are really low though, I am afraid. My essays are quite good I believe, I didn’t really like them myself, but all the people who read them (also some students I know in the US) said they were really good! So I hope they were right!

Thanks all of you for the chances! I’d chance back if someone posts links.

BUMP! Sorry for being frantic.
