I am currently a community college student in Seattle and planning to transfer to UW computer science. I've heard that the program is very very very competitive
UW is the only school I ever wanted to go to...I was rejected for freshmen admission because I had a 2.7 GPA average in high school when I was applying. (I failed 4 - 5 classes, was really lazy in high school.) But I've changed my attitudes towards my education after high school. Now I'm planning to apply after finishing all my prereq courses.
My stats:
Overall High school GPA: 3.0 (I was a running start student for the last year which boosted my GPA up a little bit.) Running start - attend college level courses while still in high school.
Overall College GPA: 3.75
Programming I: 3.6 (Prereq course)
Programming II: 3.5 (Prereq course)
Calculus I: 3.8...Calculus II: 3.5 Calculus III: 3.8 (Prereq courses)
Engineering Physics I: 3.5 (Prereq course)
Other electives courses are all 3.5 + GPA...2 B's in Spanish though ( Urghh )
Both required English courses: 4.0 (I don't know why though, my English is horrible since I'm an immigrant. ASIAN .)

I am volunteering at VA hospital. Involving with Saturday church activities. Teaching Vietnamese at the World school. (Not a lot...)

I suck at writing personal statements...(Please give me tips on how to improve!)

Also

I will also apply to WSU (Washington State University)...WWU (Western Washington University)...***I'm not sure if I will have to apply to the Comp Sci Program in these schools separately...since they don't have the application...OR just apply to the school and get admitted into the program automatically.

UW Computer Science Deparment told me the acceptance rate is 40% or upper admission and average GPA is 3.6...don't know about other factors though.

Please also give me your opinions on these schools and UW of my chances of getting in XD
Thank you!!

If possible, please give your opinions on my chance of getting accepted into the University of Washington general admission as well (exclude CS program admission)

Well, I’m not an expert on this topic. But speedsolver has some excellent advice regarding this topic. Anyways, a lot of people, even with high 3.6+ GPAs, get rejected from UW CS. One thing that speedsolver mentioned was getting involved with research projects, programming/making various games/softwares etc. Also, Interning would be very good for any major including CS.

Thank you for the advice. By any chance, do you know my odds of getting accepted into WSU + WWU Computer Science Program? I know getting into UW CS will be hard…what about other schools? :(

Unfortunately, I am going to be a freshman at UW and haven’t looked to deeply into WWU or WSU computer science programs, but I’ll let you know when I have time if I found anything regarding WSU or WWU.

I’m probably looking into transferring into the WWU CS program as an undergraduate from the UW. Information regarding the program seems pretty sparse though.

One neat factoid is that the WWU CS program is ABET accredited while the UW’s CS is not (only CE).

Yes true…MasterKuni, if you’re transfering to WWU CS Program, do you have to apply to computer science program seperately? or if you’re accepted into the WWU then 100% you will be accepted into the program. I’m still confused.

Their webmaster is in sore need of a beating. The WWU website is very poorly laid out with outdated information and broken links, but according to this link:

Regardless of what you have taken elsewhere, you must complete four computer science department courses at Western Washington University within the major to be considered for admission. Any courses for which you receive transfer credit will apply toward your degree; you do not have to retake any courses for which you have received credit.

One of the 4 classes they list as crediting towards your major application (341) doesn’t even show up on the catalog of course descriptions, so who knows.

I think you have a good chance for general UW admissions, WSU CS, and probably WWU CS, but UW CS is unpredictable enough that it’s hard to say anything concrete. I would say you have an okay chance, but unless you have strong extracurricular projects to back it up, you should definitely make sure to have good backup options.

ABET accreditation is irrelevant for UW CS, lol. There are several reasons for this, but the most important ones are: 1) CS as a field doesn’t seem to care about ABET, and 2) UW CS is good.

I don’t really have much experience with WSU CS beyond taking a sub-par C Programming class, although it looks like core courses are taught alright. There’s also some interesting research going on there.

Great job on bringing up your GPA post-high school. :)

I don’t have much to add to this thread with everyone else’s input, especially sumzup. I’ll elaborate on some things though.

To increase your chances to get into the UW CSE program (Post 3):
-Research and open source projects are great, but not everyone has this opportunity or connections.
-Personal projects show that you’re interested in the field to spend your spare time on it. Start small, like a little to do list or chrome extension. Google for tutorials; there’s a ton out there. Once you get a hang of doing the simple things, tackle a project that you are passionate about and/or can use on a personal level or even sell to others (iphone, android apps?).
-Internships are also great, but again, you might need to have connections. Also, at this point in the year, companies looking for summer interns are mostly done recruiting. However, if you’re interested in something like web development and have some experience, see if any of your local businesses are looking for a web developer.

None of the above will guarantee admissions into the department, even internships. In your personal statement, be true to yourself and write from the heart. Edit it well. :)

(Post 11)
I want to emphasize that “ABET accreditation is irrelevant for UW CS” though. Our program is competitive and we have a well built reputation to the point that most students are getting multiple competitive job offers and grad school acceptances regardless of accreditation for the major.
