Chances - IU, UMD, Tulane

I have applied or am applying to the following schools:
Indiana University - In State
Tulane University - OOS
University of Maryland - OOS
(And a couple of smaller safety schools, but I'm mainly worried about the ones above.)

I plan on majoring in either International Relations/Studies or Government & Politics depending on the school.

I would greatly appreciate any input on my chances at these schools!

You ovbiously have really solid GPA and great athletic EC’s. Your test scores will not make you competitive at Tulane and somewhat less competitive at Maryland, but you should be okay at Indiana. Apply anyway and see what happens. Good luck.

You still might have a shot at Tulane, but jshain is right that your test scores will make it tough. ACT is better than your SAT according to the conversion charts, but if you raised your scores as you hope in the October round that will improve your chances, assuming you can get it to 1900+. If you do I think your other accomplishments might put you in. This year will be tougher than others though, unfortunately for you. Tulane had a huge class this year (1630 when they were only looking to enroll 1500) so they are going to try and limit this upcoming year’s class to 1400. It will therefore be more competitive.

BTW, calling Tulane “OOS” is a bit odd, since it is a private school.

Thank you both for your input!

And, yes, fallenchemist. Most of the schools I’m applying to are public so it kind of slipped my mind when labeling! Yes, Tulane is private so where you live doesn’t apply. Silly me! =)

Bump. =) Looking for input mostly for U of MD please.

One of my kids went to Tulane, the other is going to Maryland (but was also accepted to Tulane with a scholarship…legacy may have helped). For comparison, my son’s SAT scores were higher, your ACT is higher, your GPA is higher, EC’s about the same. But then again, each year is different.

So looking at your stats, class rank is great, GPA is excellent, you are challenging yourself in your senior year and admissions offices like that (btw…if you are doing well make sure you get your recent report card in the admissions office reps hands), ACT score is in the range for UMD and Tulane. If you do not get your SAT scores to at least 1300/1900, I would suggest just sending the ACT scores. I think you definitely have a shot (but its not a lock by any means) at both schools. Also, your scores, etc. place you very favorably at Indiana.

Good luck. More importantly, make sure you visit both campuses, if you haven’t alrready. And start a dialogue with your admissions rep.

Thanks so much for the input lewmin! It was really helpful. I just got my scores back from the Oct. 9 SAT test. My writing improved which pushes my total score up to 1930. Sadly, my math and CR went down. And I know most schools don’t look at Writing, so I’m really disappointed. But do you think my superscore going from 1810 to 1930 helps at all??

Also, I have visited both IU and UofMD (not Tulane yet) and have loved them both. :)

I don’t recall if Tulane superscores the SAT and ACT. I’ll leave that to you to look up or to FallenChemist. I’d still say your SAT’s and ACT (if not superscored) will be the biggest challenge to you getting in to Tulane and UMD. Remember, even if they superscore, whatever you submit to them they will see. Also, I hope they strongly look at your #3 ranking in your high school. So, in my opinion (which does not count), and I tend to be conservative, I’d say Tulane and UMD may be a slight reach. But definitely go for it. Indiana is a great school also…no shame at all if you end up there! Also, you may love Tulane when you see it…and you may not. That’s why you need to visit. As a fallback, you may want to look at possibly two other out of state schools that are similar to your goals, but would place your SAT/ACT scores in the middle of the pack. Best of luck to you.
