Mmm…your stats look a lot better than mine (then again, I didn’t apply early). So in terms of stats, you definitely have a good chance. And your extracurriculars are strong too (w/ a math/swimming/art focus). If Stanford’s really your first choice, then I’d recommend you apply SCEA, but keep in mind that the early applicant pool is a lot stronger than the RD pool.

Essays are also important, so make sure you take the time to put some thought and effort into those.

Just curious…are you a native speaker in Chinese? If you aren’t, then that 800 on that test looks mightily impressive. Good job on your APs…it’s not easy getting straight 5s)

Oh yes, get good teacher and counselor recs, too.

Thanks so much skyraptor!
Yeah i hope that SCEA will help at least a little bit. I’ve also heard that it’s actually harder to get in early than regular but i don’t know for sure…
I wasn’t born in china but I’m exposed to the language alot in my home. I will probably end up submitting a additional SAT II’s. Hopefully I will have some higher scores by October =P

Good shot. I could see you getting in, but I could also see you getting rejected. It’s difficult to say (probably 50-50, or maybe 40-60, since your activities are a bit spread all over the place and might make you seem like a “serial joiner”).

Taking any more subject tests would be overkill.

Lol…Would it be better to not mention any of the not-so-important EC’s on the application?
I’ve actually also taken Bio and US History SAT II’s but the scores aren’t as high so I figured I wouldn’t submit them. (740 on both)
Oh well, 40% is better than nothing!

740s are plenty high to submit. really anything over about 720 or so is arbitrary.

you just look like, well, the typical high-achieving asian female Stanford applicant. from what you present here, if i was an admissions officer, you would seem rather boring. take the emphasis off of the scores and classes and resume-padding EC’s, and show them what you’re passionate about. Make them like you. Make them want to bring you to campus because you’re a really interesting person with unique dreams and the drive to make use of your opportunities. If you can’t do that, then you’re just one of the 28,128 other applicants.

^I agree.

Also, your GPA means nothing to me. First, how can you have a 5.48 on a 5.0 scale? You should probably just give UW GPA (I’m assuming you’re in honors/AP). And what is your class rank (approximate percent) in your high school? And what is your HS type: is it more IMSA/New Trier or Crane Technical Prep/Prarie Central High School (I’m guessing you’re a Glenbrook South or Niles, I don’t know why).

Hmm…I was afraid of that, to be honest. I don’t really excel at any one EC so I will really try to make my essays stand out. Art is one of my greatest passions, but will that help me get into college if I don’t plan on pursuing it as a major? I mean, I would LOVE to go into design, but I feel like that’s not really practical, esp if I’m aiming for a school like Stanford. Right now I’m geared towards medicine or engineering (which sadly makes the whole asian thing stand out even more…sigh)

don’t give up hope. you’re obviously excellent academically and extremely intelligent. think long and hard about art, design, medicine, and engineering, and what they mean to you and your dreams for the future. Only when you know that should you start your essays.

Alright thanks! I will definitely give the essays alot of thought. I’m always grateful for a source of inspiration =)
And Senior0991, our GPA is different from most schools. An A for a non-honors course is a 5.0 while an A for an AP/Honors course is a 5.5. Pluses and minuses do count, which kind of sucks. My school doesn’t rank, but I know I’m in the top 10 out of ~500 students. And I’m in the northern suburbs; I don’t want to specifically name the school I go to though.

^So top 2% for north shore public HS is pretty good. You definitely have the grades and rank and (most likely HS quality) to keep you from not getting rejected due to academic qualifications (by which I mean grades alone aren’t likely to get you in, but they can keep you out).

Yeah, you kinda shouldn’t post your HS. even if you don’t, people you know can still find you (someone found me and I found someone else from my HS, although neither I or the other CC user posted anything like HS or name or teachers or town) :(.

wow…some people must have a lot of time on their hands…though it’s kinda scary knowing how much info people can dig up via the internet

^I was kinda lucky. I was reading through a forum and I saw a post that talked about someone from my state just getting off a small waitlist. I knew someone from the same state just got off the waitlist (via facebook). I then looked at the username of this poster, and recognized that it was similar to a nickname of one of my friends. I then saw the college/location of this person, and it correlated. So, no digging up needed.

The person who found me found out I was posting here (although he didn’t know where) and then, being overly curious, found one of my posts where I listed all the schools I was accepted at. These schools correlated to mine perfectly, and then he basically proved I was the guy by looking at past posts.

I have a feeling I could find out the OP’s identity in ten minutes. Sad? Yes. But pretty cool.

Edit: my ten minutes is up. I failed. Looks like your identity is pretty safe. For now… ;)

^ haha, Senior0991, nice try (though I do appreciate the 10-minutes worth of effort you placed into your endeavor) :)

I have to say your chances are better than 40%. Despite you being an URM, I think your stats and ECs are very exceptional ( I dont think your ECs look like padding at all). I really think you are a great candidate, you may have just convinced me to apply RD instead of SCEA, lol. check out my profile and let me know if you think I can make it SCEA or if I should wait it out for RD. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/stanford-university/738094-quick-chance-stanford-2014-a.html

seriously though, I’d say 75% chance you’re in. great work!

Aren’t Asians ORMs, not URMs?
Haha thanks…don’t want to get my hopes up too high though, or else i’ll be disappointed :/

Asians are NOT counted as URMs.

and i would never say anybody had a 75% chance of getting in. i also would not base my hopes off someone’s arbitrary “chancing” either, especially when the person chancing is asking for a “chance” back. Apply, pour your heart out in your essays, and best of luck to you!

what are URMs and ORMs?! :3

^Epic CC Fail.

Anyways, URMs are under-represented minorities (black, native american, hispanic, etc.), ORMs are over-represented minorities (asians).

Alright, I don’t know why I said urm, I meant orm ( I do known the difference). Also, I wasn’t asking to be chanced back, just if you thought I should apply scea. And I truly thought the op did have a much better shot than merely 40%.
