chances @ lehigh, PSU, Pitt, etc.

I know this is a very strange list of schools, in that it covers a wide range of sizes, prestiges, and selectivities, but still, chances at:

-Temple
-Drexel
-PSU
-Lafayette
-Pitt
-Lehigh
-BC
-Cornell
-UChicago

SAT: 740 M, 800 CR, 770 W (2310, or 1540 to some schools)
PSAT: 73 M, 71 CR, 80 W (224)

GPA: 3.7ish weighted, 3.5ish unweighted (bigtime the weak point on my resume)
*But, for what it's worth, have consistently taken the most difficult classes available to me (all Honors and AP)

Expect to write some pretty solid essays.

Extracurriculars:
(since 9th grade)
-Boy Scouts (Eagle rank)(and a bunch of volunteering through Scouts)
-HS JV soccer (9th, 10th)
-HS Varsity soccer (11th)
-HS Jazz Band pianist (11th, 12th)
-Jazz combo pianist (11th, 12th)
-HS Percussion Ensemble (9th, 10th)
-HS Indoor Drumline (9th)
-National Honors Society (11th)
-piano lessons (past 12 years)
-PJAS (science fair) 1st place at regional and state competitions (not actually the best project at the fair, a lot of people get 1sts) (9th)
-may join debate or academic team this fall in lieu of soccer (12th)

**I know this list is shorter than some people's, but I also feel like its pretty well-rounded. Thoughts on ways to improve it?

**** NOTE **** My situation is different from most people on this board, in that my dad is a professor at Lehigh, and I'd get free tuition if I applied and got in there. Thus, unless I not only get in at another school but also get a better (or competitive) financial offer, Lehigh it is. So info regarding my competitiveness for significant financial aid at any of those schools is also much appreciated.

Thanks,

I think you’d get into all the PA schools and just curious, do you go to Moravian Acadamy?

nope, I live nearish to it though

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

I’d be shocked if you didn’t get into all of those schools, save for UChicago and Cornell (aka, reaches for everyone). Very impressive EC’s and test score’s, still a solid GPA, and IMO you have a good variety of schools (i’m guessing you live in PA, so PSU is your safety? is it a financial safety as well?). You have a good head on your shoulders.

I wish you the best in the applications process! :)

thanks! and yeah, im in PA

and actually unless I get pretty substantial academic scholarships from PSU, its a bit too pricey… thats why I’m really hoping for Lehigh (free tuition via my dad working there)… anyway I’m glad your confident about my odds, particularly at LU

If you want a better FA deal than Lehigh, beside Lafayette that might be interested in taking you away from a rival ;), you need to look further afield - look at the South, the Midwest, etc.

hmm any ideas for schools which might be good to check out? I’m open to going further from my home ¶, its just that between the LU faculty brat benefit and the in state tuition at public schools, I haven’t really had any need till now to look much further. Ideally, the school would be in an at least interesting-ish city or area, have an accredited architecture program, and have a pretty solid engineering department.

Why Cornell? Not a penny of merit aid.

well, it has a very strong architecture dept., which im tentatively interested in, its a good distance away, and it allegedly meets all calculated need (although yeah, no merit aid, so probably not really a gamer)

If your father is a professor you likely qualify for need based aid from Cornell. So indeed why not? is architecture a prerequisite or just something you’d like to investigate? Right now architecture is one of the worst majors in terms of job prospects and pay but if you’re passionate and dedicated I understand. Otherwise you may be interested in engineering them go for architecture knowing you have something to fall back upon.

well I’ve been considering whether it would be possible to double major in arch and engineering (lehigh has a fairly rare program for that actually), but I was at CMU the other day talking to the Arch dept admissions director and she seems pretty adamant that engineering and architecture are two separate fields/thought processes that don’t really mix very well (as somebody who switched from engineering to arch in college herself).

So, I guess you could say I have no clue how important an arch program is to me right now haha. Talking to lehigh admissions and hopefully arch and eng soon, and maybe that’ll clear things up.

Oh, and if anybody could shed any light into what goes into an incoming arch student’s “portfolio” that would be great too, cuz if I go with arch I’m apparently going to need one.

Cornell and UChicago could give you problems with your gpa. other than that, i think your in everywhere else.

chance back?

jisaacs2215 if theres anything you could have learned from this post its that i’m way to clueless about colleges to give any meaningful chances haha

(to avoid the annoying page flip and as a bump, my last post and questions)
