Chances: Low to High Acceptance Rate Colleges

Hey everyone, it would be awesome if you could chance me for a few schools I am looking at, thanks.

From easiest to hardest:
(I go to a Public School in Georgia)
Auburn
Georgia
UF (Dream School)
UNC
Cornell
Columbia

My GPA is a 4.0, where Honors are .5 points higher and AP are 1 point higher.
I will have taken 8 AP classes by the time I graduate, and I have taken all Honors courses.
1st SAT: 1800
2nd SAT: 1950
1st ACT: 29
2nd ACT: 34

ECs

I have worked in Customer Service at Publix for a little over a year.
I spent my last Thanksgiving volunteering at my church serving food to the less fortunate.
I have also spent time serving in my city's food bank.
I have been a member of Beta Club since 6th grade, will join National Honor Society this year.
I am most likely applying EA for all of these schools.

AP Scores

Euro- 10th Grade (3)
Stats- 10th Grade (2)
Physics- 11th Grade (4)

Thanks for your time.

What is your unweighted GPA? (A=4, B=3, C=2, etc.)

If you are above, say, a 3.25 unweighted, you are most likely in at UGA and Auburn and with your good ACT (34 is really good…), you are likely also in at Florida.

We need to know your unweighted GPA to better evaluate your chances for acceptance at Columbia, Cornell and UNC. (UNC is tough OOS – not Columbia or Cornell, but tough).

Others can evaluate your ECs if they so choose.

Thanks for the comment, my UW GPA is a 3.4 I believe, I can guarantee you it is above a 3.25 though. Should I mention my diagnosis with ADHD in the 1st grade in my essay? I dont want to sound like I’m making excuses.

Okay – concentrate on your grades this semester. Get that GPA up as high as you can.

If Florida is your dream school… I think you are already okay, but you certainly don’t want to slip, and it cannot hurt to improve that GPA.

UNC – your ACT is well above average for them, but your GPA is not. Worth a shot IMO – they might see your potential in your high ACT. 34 really is excellent.

Columbia/Cornell – go for it, but while your ACT is competitive, your GPA is not. So if you want to get into Columbia or Cornell, work to shore up ECs, get great recommendations, write great essays, etc.

BTW – make sure you do submit your ACT to the schools at which you apply. A 34 ACT would be something like a 2250-2300 SAT… like I said, very good.

Thanks for the information, I definitely am looking for opportunities to improve my ECs. I am a little more concerned about the cost of going to UF OOS than getting in, does anyone have info on UFs OOS assistance? I am in the 70k a yearish tax bracket.

BumpBumpBump

Yet another bump.

Great ACT score. Like the others said you should definitely try to raise your GPA. Extracurriculars seem spotty and the norm for many applicants, which isn’t good for the Ivys. You don’t seem to show a passion which will be a problem for Cornell and Columbia.

I’d say you have a good chance at UF, Georgia, and UNC. Cornell and Columbia are definitely high reaches but it’s worth a shot. Can’t say anything about Auburn, don’t know enough about it.

If you do indeed have a passion for something then you really need to emphasize it in your essay – this is important.

Any hooks? Minority status, legacy, donor, etc.?

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1386768-chance-me-lacs-ivys.html

Thanks for your response, youre right, I dont a passion for Ivy League, I began considering them once I received my ACT score. I know this sounds ridiculous, but it would be near impossible for me to turn down UF if it was possible for my family. I have always wanted to got to UF and no college can match the experience I will have at UF, I dont think that the education of an Ivy would match that (sounds crazy, I know). As for Auburn, that is the least selective of the colleges I am applying to, so I should be good. Again, thanks for your input!

UNC is basically as high a reach as Cornell and Columbia if you don’t live in north Carolina.

You’re welcome. If you don’t mind me asking, why do you feel so strongly about UF?

I was raised a HUGE Gator fan, it is close enough to my parents, I feel like it is a great match to my academics, and they just began an Academy strictly for business, primarily entreprenuership (my main focus) with seperate classes and housing.

Like others have said, I would definitely only use the ACT score and ignore the SAT scores :). You have a great chance for the first 3, and the last 3 are reaches (but worth trying for!)

Make sure you take SAT Subject Tests for the colleges that need them, like Cornell in some cases!

Thanks for the advice, Im looking at taking the Physics and Math II Subject Tests, only take an hour, and they are my strongest classes. I guess my main concern is now becoming OOS Tuition for UF. If anyone has any info on OOS Scholarships that would be awesome, I’m having a hard time finding solid material.
Thanks again Pandamic!

Bumpbumpbump

Your ECs and not that good, and GPA is low. That said, your not getting into the last three, but you should be good for UF. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response ImSoAmbitious, do you think my year of Customer Service is a very good EC? Thats what Im thinking about writing my essay about.

BumpBumpBump

You are in all automatically except Cornell and Columbia only because they are reaches for everyone. If you want a better chance then do not send your act but if you did ED to Cornell I am certain you’d get in.
