They are all reaches, given your one dimensional resume-academia. However, because of your ethnicity and first generation status, you will definitiely have a great chance at all three. In particular Cornell and JHU, I don’t know much about Carnegie Mellon.

If possible, have your essays include something about how your life outside of academics is a part of your life. Other than that, your resume looks excellent. Obviously, the test scores are low for all three schools, however, I would merely send the ACT scores if I were you. They look more well rounded and definitely exemplify your given skills. Then, the Subject Tests are also excellent other than math; send those.

If I had to attach percentages, I would say Cornell: 40%, JHU: 50%, and Carnegie Mellon I honestly am not sure.

Just for clarification, I would strongly urge you to add safety schools that you know you can get into, just because those three are all very selective, and in this admissions process, ANYTHING can happen.

ProcrastinArtist
You are not completely right. Being an Indian doesn’t have an edge. He would be considered as Asian male-not hooked. As a fact of fact, it hurts our chance. I am an asian male too. Bring your SAT up to at least 2100+. Then you would have a better chance in any of the three schools. Your ECs are average. So be sure to add some safety schools…

Being an Indian doesn’t add any chance! It hurts us a lot.

CMU is ranked #23 in national universities and #8 in undergraduate engineering programs.

It is not as selective as cornell though with a 33% acceptance rate.

Yeah my SAT scores have got to improve and I’m aware of that. Im retaking it in December. My ECs can’t be any different now so I’ll just ride it out.

My sibling has a chronic life long illness that has severely affected my family and affected how many ECs I can do… mostly because of the money. Would it be wise to mention this and if so where would I mention this information? I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to give a sob story for admission so I didn’t mention this info at all in the state schools I’ve already applied to.

Actually, I think you should include the sob story. But be direct and matter-of-fact about it, not like you’re asking for favors or begging. I’d say it’s good to give yourself more dimension because I don’t see much of it from your courses or ECs. You better make sure your essays are damn good and give the colleges a good idea of who you are other than a bunch of numbers.

Okay thanks.

I would like to know my chances at Carnegie Mellon since it is my first choice.

Will it be less than Cornell and JHU or more? Anyone?

Carnegie: Match
Cornell: Match
JHU: Reach

i actually believe you do have decent chances at CMU and Cornell.
3.91GPA and 33ACT (i dont think you have to submit SAT) and 780-780-700 SAT IIs.

(700 on SAT math 2? what the heck?)

CMU, Cornell: solid chances
JHU: reach

good luck to you

Your GPA certainly seems on par with Cornell. You have a good chance at at least Cornell and CMU and John Hopkins, especially with your high GPA and test scores (I would work on the writing, but they might not look at that). I’d stay hopeful, but I would also apply to backup schools. Some recommendations I have are UVA, UNC, University of Michigan, and University of Maryland.

Chance me back?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1245412-chances-college.html

Thanks for the well thought out replies guys. I have already applied to University of Maryland and Clemson as my safety schools.

I really don’t understand how JHU is harder to get into than Ivy League Cornell. Whatever, JHU is my last choice anyway :)

Basically what I’ve gotten from all these chances are: either my ECs are terribly lacking and I dont have a shot or I have a solid chance… Have no idea lol.

JHU acceptance rate- 21%
Cornell U- 18%

The numbers dont lie

To be honest I think you have a good chance at all CMU and Cornell. Your science-aspects are very strong, which is very good because engineering is your intense major. I’d say 40% at JHU and 60 at CMU and Cornell. Good luck!

You have a good chance at CMU, and the other two are probably low reaches. And don’t send your SATI.

OK but CMU requires that I send all my test scores… wouldn’t that be blatantly violating rules which could jeopardize whatever chance I had?

thanks for reply

^If it explicitly tells you to send all scores, you should do it. Otherwise, pick and choose.
