Oh and one more question…does Wellesley have a big rivalry with Smith? my mum jokingly said not to apply there…

You have alright stats but your ECs are weak. Legacy status will help for sure though. Overall you have a good shot.

I don’t think we have a big rivalry with Smith… it’s definitely not as big as Harvard/Yale, USC/UCLA, Stanford/Cal…

“Sports - tennis 4 years” Competitive sports are time-consuming. Your ECs are allright. Are you thinking about playing at Wellesley? You should contact the coach.

Sports are time consuming, yes. The few other clubs/activities she has were only done in one or two years…all pretty much in junior/senior year. Imo, that’s basically app padding and adcoms will see that.

wells10, I love your commitment to this board. You give great advice to Wellesley applicants and incoming first years. I somewaht disagree with your assessment of OP’s ECs. App padding - may be or maybe not. We don’t know the full picture. For instance, in my D’s school district, 9th graders go to Jr. Highs, HS is sophomores through seniors. Naturally, at D’s gigantic suburban HS all “leadership” positions were held by juniors and seniors, because sophomores were busy adjusting to new campus, new classmates, new courses, etc. My D’s school-related ECs all looked like she was “padding her resume”, because she participated in them during her Jr-Sr years. Her “personal” ECs, however, included a multi-year commitment to a competitive sport (a few hours daily).

OP - I’m somewaht confused that you use past tense when you talk about your senior year. Are you taking a gap year?

Did not think of that! Thank you for the info.

From what I’ve found at Wellesley, most girls participated in a slew of activities during hs – everyone was involved in everything they could be. You’re right, a post on here does not give the whole picture, but I feel that compared to other current students or prospective applicants, the OP might be lacking in this area given the information she has posted here.

Granted I know other students whose lives were their sport in hs, experienced extenuating circumstances (injury, etc) and so could not play at the Division 1 level. Thus, these students chose different paths for their college lives instead of pursuing athletics. Everyone’s lives give them different opportunities.

Thanks for the thoughtful replies. I posted my stats as if i were writing my apps this upcoming fall. I do lack in EC i guess one additional one that can be added is that i tutored for two years at a local middle school. I am not 100% yet if i want to concentrate on tennis in college but could be an option. My guidance counselor told me that Wellesley would be a mtach for me but now im not quite sure…also if anyone can add how the philosophy and econ programs are regarded would be great. Thanks so much!

Wellesley’s Economics Dept is first-rate. If you are looking for professors who are
both committed to teaching and also well known in economics circles, Wellesley fits the criteria.

Economics professors such as Chip Case, known for the famous Case/Schiller Home Price Index as well as his dynamic teaching, Marshall Goldman an expert on the economy of the former Soviet Union with a professorship at Wellesley and an Associate Directorship at the Harvard Russian Research Center are just 2 examples of the stars who form Wellesley’s Economics Department. All the professors I had in the Econ Dept were engaging in the classroom, supportive and great resources for both students eager to take on Wall Street or continue in academia after graduation. Take time to look at the Econ classes in Wellesley’s course catalogue, and if you visit Wellesley again sit in on an Econ class.

Another aspect to keep in mind, is the fact the Econ Dept hosts great lectures and is also affiliated with the Economics Student Board, a selective organization for students who are passionate about economics. When I was a student at Wellesley, the Econ Department also helped organize the Wall Street Warm Up–a bus trip to NYC for juniors and seniors to meet with Wellesley alumnae in the field and hear first-hand about their experience on Wall Street (ranging from their profession to their company/bank). These alumnae offered advice and also spoke highly of the solid education they received from Wellesley, praising the Econ Dept.

I hope this information is helpful (-: If I knew first-hand about the Philosophy Department, I would give you insight, but I really did not take any courses in this department.

The Wall Street Warm-Up Trip is still put on by the investment society each fall. About 40 students participate in it and it is open to all students, regardless of year. It’s a really great way to get to know some of the banks and what it would be like to work there.
