In the midst of doing college apps I stumbled upon this site and decided that I would have you guys give me an idea of what to expect.

I am a white male who will not qualify for any need based financial aid.

I want to be a Mechanical Engineer

SAT I - 1990 R-600 M-780 W-610

SAT II Math 770
(retook math and physics and will know those scores in 3 days.)

GPA weighted 4.53 (9-12) 4.75 (10-12)

I don't have that good of EC's but I did get first place in the school AMC 12 math contest last year.

I have two pretty interesting essays but they are not really well written like in the style department because I am more of a math/science guy but I hope colleges will understand.

My two safety schools that I would be fine going to are Cal Poly and LMU.

I am also applying to a lot of reach schools which I want to know my chances at.

They include:

Stanford
Carnegie Mellon
Duke
Olin
Harvey Mudd
Rensseler
Georgia Tech
University of Florida
Berkeley
UCSD

I thought that I would apply to a lot to raise the chances and if I get into one then I would be happy.

Your SAT score is too low for Stanford, Mudd, Duke, and Olin. You also have no EC's so I'd say you have a very low shot at these four schools.

Just because you are skilled at math/science doesn't mean you automatically have to be a bad writer. The top schools you are applying to want well rounded students, not science robots. The colleges won't just "understand."

Your best chances are at Rensselaer, UCSD, and Florida. If you have done volunteer work and been active in clubs you would also have slight chances at UC Berkeley and at Georgia Tech.

Stanford--Reach
Carnegie Mellon
Duke--Reach
Olin--Gigantic Reach
Harvey Mudd--Reach
Rensseler (should be Rensselaer--might want to learn to spell that correctly if you plan to go there)--Match
Georgia Tech--Match to Slight Reach
University of Florida--Match
Berkeley--Slight Reach (in-state)
UCSD--Match

Also, you are match at both Cal Poly SLO and at Loyola Marymount.

Thanks for the replies.

That is what I am expecting.

I do have a lot of ECs but most of them are like working on a film set for 40 hours one week. Or building houses in mexico for 24 hours one week.

I have some clubs but no big things like 20 hours a week for 48 weeks a year.

I think they want ECs with a lot of weeks a year. :(

Like I said before I am fine going to Cal Poly but I decided to apply to a bunch of reach schools because the 2% chance I have of getting in is multiplied by 8 if I apply to a bunch.
