I’m wondering what my son’s chances are of being admitted. We live in IL so out of state. He is a senior and he has an SAT score of 1480 (780 Math and 700 Reading/Writing). His GPA is 3.70 UW and 3.97 W. Class rank is 26/290 so in the top 10%. He has taken AP Physics, APUSH, AP Gov and AP Environmental Science. This year he is registered to take AP Chem, AP Calc BC, AP Computer Science, and AP Stats. Junior year he got all A’s or A-‘s in his courses. He has gotten 1 C Sophomore year in Spanish 3 and all other grades where A’s and B’s. He wants to study mechanical engineering. So just wondering what his chances of being admitted are. Thanks.
NC State has a ~50% admit rate for engineering and an avg SAT around 1400. He is out of state. Only 10% of OOS students are represented on campus. It really comes down to how many from your area are applying there… the fewer the better for him. Looking at the numbers i’d think a 25% chance.
Oh thanks. I didn’t realize that it was such a low out of state admit rate.
He has a shot at UIUC.
FWIW, there is a 18% cap on out of state enrollment for the north carolina schools. Specifically for NCSU this year, there were just over 4800 freshmen, with only 663 out of state. It’s tough for out of state applicants. Link to data-

Generally NCSU does not bump up against the cap, but other schools in the UNC system do.
oops - I used some bad math, then deleted post.
