Chances of a Random IB Student

White female ( :-( ) living in VA.

GPA: 4.52 (weighted, of course)
Class Rank: 2/377
SATs: Old--Verbal 800, Math 720
New--CR 760, Math 780, Writing 800 *note some colleges don't accept old scores, so I have either 2380 or 2340 collective.
SAT IIs taken (French, Eng. Lit, Biology E) but scores not yet received.
AP Exams: Psychology (5), Comp. Gov (5), U.S. Gov (5), Eng. Lang (5), Calc B/C (5--man that was tough), U.S. History (5). Self-studied for U.S. Gov and Eng Lang! :-)
IB SL exams: French (7), Art (5) [most subjective subject, I know...but ick, a mere 5]

Course load: HL Math, HL Biology, HL English, HL History, SL Social Anthro, AP French, Theory of Knowledge (sem), then Creative Writing (sem--4.0). Junior year I took nothing but 5.0 classes. Have not received anything but A's to date.

Awards: National Merit Semi-Finalist, AP Scholar w/Distinction; won a Stockholm Jr. Water Prize at state science fair in Grade 10; 2 "best history student" awards in grades 9 and 11.

Highlight ECs: Relay for Life 9-12, student government 10-12 (mostly secretary), museum horticulture volunteer 11-12, classical piano 9-12, People to People Student Ambassador summer 10. (Went to Europe.) Also Math HS (11-12, VP now) and Nat'l HS (11-12). I also make art (9-12). Won National Novel Writing Month (simply by writing 50,000 words in a month.)

Recs: Math teacher wrote about my "great SATs" without even knowing what I got (I've since told her); English teacher writes beautifully herself and we once went out for coffee together.

Personal Essay: About reading "Hamlet" and impulsively dressing up as him for "Superhero Day" ^_^ . Includes kicking Yorick's skull down the stairs to get over my fear of skulls! (Gee, I hope no adcom reads these boards.) Did include several play quotes incorporated into the writing, as well as a pun...is it justified if the subject is "Hamlet"?

Hooks: legacy at William and Mary (father received MBA there).

Applying RD to: UVA (already applied), William & Mary, Harvard, Brown, Yale, Dartmouth, Princeton (in the hopes that I'll get lucky...once at least.) Interviews at Harvard and Princeton will hopefully allow me to tell them that I value loving the subject (Creative Writing, Art in Grade 10, which is why I'm #2, not #1) more than taking the most weighted course, and play up my "old soul English-loving intellectual" side.

I know you're "not the admissions committee," but I'd just like to see what you think, sort of for fun. I know that however good I am, I'm not guaranteed anywhere, though--one of my friends, #6, got deferred ED from Columbia (yikes--my faith dropped 20%)--but I'd just like to see what you think, like percentages--because the Academic Index seems to indicate better odds than I thought I had. (False hope?) The thoughts of IB ED applicants to these places would be especially appreciated, though all of your thoughts are important to me. Thanks!

I bet your friend who got rejected didnt have a 1580!

UVA might actually be a safety for you, but ill say safe match
WM- safety

Harvard and Princeton arent matches for anyone, but you have an EXCELLENT chance (~40%)

An impressive courseload! My school didn't offer Math HL or Social Anthro SL, but I've heard Math HL can be rough.

You're probably in at W&M and UVa. Brown and Dartmouth are nice matches. HYP are reaches, as they are for everyone, but excellent essays will give you a boost. Yale in particular seems to favor IB applicants. Good luck!

Somebody ban this troll.

why do you think shes a troll?

Because my stats look too good? sarcastic grin--hah! It still won't be enough I'm just doing what everyone else has, posting my stats.

Math HL is a beast. At least in my school.

I think that Calc AP BC is just about as much work as IB HL

i want HL math.. stupid school offering it the year after i leave... and what happened to being able to schedule HL's in math, chem, and physics..? that would be... bliss..

but yeah.. i think u've got a good chance at everything ... then again I really dont have the authority to say.

I'm not so sure, habdragon. IB courses usually involve more work than AP's. Unless you're referring to difficulty? Calc BC isn't that hard, and I'm pretty sure Math HL covers topics Calc BC doesn't.

Math HL covers Calc BC and the other options that IB requires. Trust me, BC doesn't even compare. The kids in my HL class HAD to get a 5 on AP Calc AB to be admitted into the class.

OK, SAT II results in...

French: 650 (so terrified now)
Bio: 770
English Lit: 800 (well, that fits...)

Any new thoughts?

Thanks!

Sorry to sound a bit rude, but why on Earth are you even posting? You have amazing stats; they could hardly get any better, and they won't at this point. Do you just need reassurance? You're going to hear what is expected: you have a very solid chance at all of these schools and it's luck from here on out. Whether or not you're accepted, you're a highly qualified applicant applying to schools where lots of highly qualified applicants get rejected - and accepted. So I don't understand the point of posting...?

I mean, it just really gets on my nerves when kids post lamenting SAT scores in the 600s or 'only' a 5 on an IB test. Come on! OK, OK, so we all have different standards for ourselves... but of course you must know how intelligent you are and you mustn't put yourself down in an attempt at - what? - modesty or compliments.

So, don't fear, my friend. You've got great chances... but that's no gurantee, as you are aware. If it helps, last year's valedictorian (also IB) was rejected from Harvard but accepted to UPenn and Brown. He was super-crazy smart and involved.

IB classes arent always more work than APs, and as far as difficulty goes, SLs are easier than AP, while HLs are harder

Hm. Interesting; never heard of that before. Makes me wish I'd continued to HL Art (but I mean...come on...it's Art) but glad I took AP French.

Actually, I think it may be a sort of reverse psychology...maybe I want to hear that I won't get in? So I can try to better prepare myself for the rejections ("Oh, yeah, they're all right...ok")? I was brought up in a totally grade-oriented environment (read insane parents ^_^), which is definitely why I kick myself for anything less than perfect (a flaw on my part, I know) and I do not like my ECs, to tell the truth.

I guess you're right, it's all luck....would it help if I now vow to stop posting chances threads? ^_^
