Chances of acceptance for HKU/HKUST/CUHK

Hello all,

I am an international student currently residing in the United States. I am really interested in attending HKU, HKUST or CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong). Since online information on the quality of students admitted is scarce, I wanted to get other people’s insights on my chances. Also, if there’s any international student accepted to either of these universities, please post your stats :))) .

Here are my Stats:

SAT:
1910 ( The low end of the spectrum , but I should be able bump this up at least 100-150 points come December)
SAT subject :
I haven’t taken any SAT Subject test yet, but based on practice tests, my scores are probably going fluctuate around these numbers:

SAT Math 1: 730-790
SAT Physics: 780-800
SAT World History: 700~

My High School GPA is around 98%, and I am ranked as the top 5% in my school

Unfortunately, my school only offers two AP’s (Calculus AB and English) which I will be taking the coming year. However, I did take a few college courses at the local university (extracurriculars)

Extracurriculars:

SRMP - I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with a professional astrophysicist and conduct astrophysical research at the American Museum of Natural History. I was featured in a video on the Museum’s website, in a series called “Shelf life”.

Model United Nations: Visited Harvard University, University of Virginia, and Washington University
(will run for club president coming year)

Chinese culture club

I also took a few courses at AMNH in Physics and Astronomy in my freshman and sophomore years

I took two college courses at my local college, getting a high mark of A in both Statistics and Astronomy

I will doing an internship at AMNH this fall, where I will interact with visiters using mini science demonstrations

I was part of Student Government in my freshman year, as published a couple articles in the school’s newspaper. I will likely rejoin in my final year.

BTW, I am interested in majoring in Physics

Please let me know what you think of my chances.

I don’t know anything about those Chinese universities, but you should consider adding Michigan State University to your list. Check out their various physics programs here: https://www.pa.msu.edu/

They have a National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) and Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB), and many other amazing resources and activities. Faculty are involved in all types of physics-related research that you could possibly help out with, including nuclear astrophysics if that interests you at all: https://www.pa.msu.edu/research

Hello,
Thank you for the link. I will also be applying to universities within the U.S.

Also, for those that did get accepted to HKU/HKUST/CUHK, when were you notified of your acceptance? I found some applicants received notifications of admission in late may or june, which would be problematic as I must confirm with local universities here in the U.S by early may, the latest. :-S

I got notified on August 3rd from CUHK… hahaha quite a late time.
