Chances of acceptance for UCI fall 2019?

I have a 4.00 unwieghted gpa and 4.33 UC gpa
best SAT is 1250 but retaking it
APs: 4 apush, 2 bio, going to take calc AB and gov
in context I have taken every science class but one at my shool and every math class except cp stats as well
ASB commisioner, president, and vice president (fresh, soph, junior)
Community service club 3 years
CSF fresh rep, treasurer for 2 years, and president
varsity track for 4 years
cross country jv one year
rural community

chances of being a biomed engineer or chemistry at UCI?

What is your SAT breakdown especially the Math section?

Your UC GPA is very competitive but you need to bump up your SAT score into the 1350+ range for Biomed Engineering.

Average UC GPA for BioMed Engineering was 4.16 and SAT of 1359
Average UC GPA for Chemistry was 4.02 and SAT 1286.

Apply for BioMed Engineering and select Chemistry as your alternate.

English 630 and math 620. I just scored a 660 on my math section for a practice so hopefully I will get closer to that. I also forgot to mention I qualify for the ELC and am the first in my family to go to college. For admission, when do UCs admit for an alternate major over your primary major?

Retaking the SAT and bumping up your Math score will help. First generation is considered. ELC only guarantees that if you do not get into your choice UC, then UC Merced will accept you if spots are available.

UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. If you do not meet their admission criteria for your 1st choice major, they will consider you for your 2nd choice/alternate major or Undeclared. Each UC admits differently.

This is what UCI looks for in their application review:

  • IRVINE
    *
  • Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Extracurricular activities, Level of applicant's interest, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience

  • Important: Character/personal qualities, Class rank

  • Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, State residency

  • Note: Demonstrated record of academic preparation, educational engagement, talent and skills important.

  • Freshman Selection:
UCI admits into the University first and then into the major. In the case that UCI is unable to accommodate all qualified applicants in their first-choice major, those students who indicate a valid alternate major may be offered admission in that major or Undeclared.

Okay and applying undeclared has no impact on your acceptance?

Applying Undeclared does not have an impact but make sure you understand what is required to declare your intended major. Even if you meet all the requirements, changing into competitive majors is not guaranteed. If you are leaning toward Biological sciences with a concentration in Microbiology, then apply with that major.

Okay so I got my new sat score. 1280. 660 eng 620 math.
So I am trying to decide on majors.
chemistry- 650 math and 630 eng
applied physics- 730 math and 630 eng
physical science undeclared- 690 math 620 eng
undeclared engineering- 670 math and 640 eng
biomedical engineering- 690 math and 650 eng
those scores are averages from the last year
Engineering is the major I really want but I would be more than okay with the other majors. What combo of these would give me the best chances of acceptance?

I would apply to Undeclared Engineering with an alternate in Chemistry based on your test scores. Your SAT Math score is low for Engineering. Below are the requirements needed to declare an Engineering major.

Alright thanks!

So you think Undeclared engineering with an alt in chemistry gives me the best chances of acceptance with these types of majors?

It really comes down to what you think is best for you and your future career aspirations. Much easier to switch out of Engineering than to switch into Engineering.

Okay also I just realized that the CSUs and UCs have different GPA scales so my CSU gpa is a 4.33 but my UC gpa is a 4.12 if I did the math right. My school only has about 7 AP classes, which I have taken 4 of, but quite a few honors. Does this sound right regarding my gpa difference?

The CSU capped weighted GPA= UC capped weighted GPA. The UC’s also have a fully weighted UC GPA which does not cap the extra honors points at 8 semesters but all the data you see referred to on the UC websites is the capped weighted UC GPA.

I like to use the Rogerhub calculator which gives you the UW UC GPA, Capped weighted UC GPA and the Fully weighted UC GPA.

Also not all HS honor courses are UC approved, so if you check this link for your HS, it will list all the courses that will get the extra honors points in the GPA calculation.

Okay thank you. It ended up being a 4.18

So I applied with engineering undeclared and chemistry alternate and some people are starting to hear back from the university. I have yet to hear back but I know some friends who have got in with physics majors and such. Does the university select the top applicants and keep going down the list? starting to make me nervous. Is it typical to hear back in February?

Yes, Honors kids have already been notified. For the vast majority though, the announcement comes sometime in mid-March and apparently it rolls for a couple of days, meaning those who got in are notified one day, waitlisted people another day.

I just got accepted to UCSC today. Is getting accepted early to this UC a good indicator that UCI will prove fruitful?

@owenUCI: Each UC campus will review applicants and determine whom they accept based on their own criteria so getting into one UC does not necessarily indicate you will get into other UC’s. However, being a high stat admit for UCSC does mean you are competitive for many of the other UC campuses.

Was accepted to UCSB the other day, good sign for Irvine I’m hoping, but the unknown of their decision date is causing axiety

Have nearly similar stats as you hoping for UCI also congrats on UCSB
