Also, what do people suggest doing in order to get my SAT scores up? i tried using a book with practice tests before the first one but it didn’t work to well

anyways, just let me know if i have any chance at all. lol, thanks in advance

Eh, your stats look a lot like mine - top public high school, I had a 3.2 gpa (3.4 weighted), with 2 AP courses (didn't care about the college credit so didn't take the tests), 3 college courses, 3 honors courses. 670m 680v. Senior year 1st semester gpa was 3.8 (although that apparently did little good in the end). No sports and little school involvement (because it was so far away), but tons of stuff in the community; owned a business, member of the chamber of commerce & historic society, volunteer for beautification program, etc. Recs were excellent, and the essay I would give a 6/10 I guess (but imo it isn't as important as they say it is).
REJECTED.

Yep. Although American has certainly accepted students with far lower stats, I wasn't one of them. And given how increasingly competitive admissions has become in the past 2 years, I would put your chances at "slim".

One of the parts on the SAT I had a hard time with were analogies, and I found that the "SAT for Dummies" book really helped out with them - I ended up getting 100% on that section. There are many good resources on the internet, both free and pay, that will allow you to judge what areas you need to work on, and improve upon them. I used to be terrible at writing essays, and even though my high school really pushed research papers and writing methods, it took a college course to make my writing a lot better. And not a course on writing, either - it was political science. Just by being required to write very strong papers, and having the different perspective of a professor to help guide me, I was able to churn out much better writing. Not that it did me much good when I wrote my college essays, because I did them at the last minute and had a hard time finding anybody to read them for me. So, yes, practice is what is needed here. In your AP classes this coming year, try to put extra effort into your writing, meet with the teacher after class to have him or her review it and make suggestions, and really go in-depth with your research. Explore the whole cause-effect relationship, give more details than you think you will need, and tie your ideas together as much as possible (even if the connection is somewhat remote).

well i am at a top flight private school in MA. Play basketball, soccer, and baseball. Have worked for three years.

idk.... really... i mean i got accecpted w/ a 3.3 gpa (frosh =2.09 soph = 3.3 jr = 3.7) w/ a handful of honors courses and 1 AP... and i was accecpted with a 1240 sat (600v 640m) yet i had a great letter of rec a great essay and i did get a gold award in girl scouts by creating a literacy program... idk... yet i was accecpted 2 years ago (i'm going to be a soph). Yet i don't know ANYONE w/ stats as low as mine. Yet again i only asked like 4 people... most of them, claimed that they got in the 1300ish range... (or high 1200 range) and had like a 3.6ish 3.8 gpa...

Anyway... the way things are looking at AU.. it seems like its getting harder and harder to get in. It really depends on the pool of students. If people look at AU and discover that this school is a real gem, then it may be harder to get into then if people by pass the school.. anyway i'd apply. I wouldn't say that your chances are slim by any means. I would say that this school is a match/ slighly high match. I think though it also depends on what program/ school your interested in... aka its easier to get into CAS then SIS or SPA.

Also are u plannig on going ED? that will greatly help your chances if you are serious about AU.

hope that helped... and good luck!!!!!!!!

mredsox89,
How can you be in the top 10% of your class with around a 3.3 GPA...that seems a little illogical? At my school, a 3.5 will put you in the top 50% of the class.

i will not be applying ED to AU as it is just a school i am looking at, certainly not my top choice. In regards to my top 10%, my school does not rank and only has about 80 students per graduating class. To my knowledge, i figure to be in the top 20 students so i guess i would say minimum of top 25%. In the original post, i was just using it as a guidline to see what people would have said.

*ohhh and just to clarify my typo... i had a 2.90 gpa my frosh year... not a 2.09...

ummm... mredsox89... if your school doesn't rank then it doesn't rank and it doesn't make sense to make up numbers and percentiles if they are just a guess...

anyway with that being said... and just looking at your stats minus your class rank... i'd say AU is a high match seeing as your GPA is on a declining trend and there doesn't seem to be anything earth shattering about your stats. But yet again... what do i know... i'm only a college student...apply and see what happens... just make sure you apply 2 a wide range of schools... with matches, reaches, and safeties.
