Chances of acceptance

My son is ranked 68/603. SAT score 1280. Pre AP calculus, physics, multiple engineering classes in school. In NHS , drum line section leader , numerous EC’s. Was wondering chances of getting accepted since he is a review admit due to 1280 SAT?

It’s possible. Engineering is a lot more competitive than getting into A&M. Most of the admits are done as freshmen, and it’s virtually impossible to get in from the outside without a near 4.0 college GPA. UT and A&M are the only schools with such admissions policies. Schools like UT-Dallas, U of H, and Texas State are much more fair to their students.

His GPA is 4.0 unweighted. It’s the SAT score of 1280 that I think might hold him back.

He is a high school senior. So will be entering as freshman

@KW2000 Your son is a review applicant to the university because he is below 10.0% and though he is in the top quarter of his class he doesn’t qualify as an academic admit because his SAT is below 1360 (with qualifying sub scores). Every applicant to engineering undergoes a separate review process for fitness for the engineering major.

What are his subscore break down and did he have cal AB, BC or both?

My best guess is that a full offer of admissions to College Station is the least likely, but a full admissions offer for Engineering in Galveston, where general engineering students spend at minimum, their first year, until they satisfy the course requirements to Apply To A Major (ETAM) could be in the cards. His SAT is not ideal but his rank is great. His math subscore will be taken into consideration as well as how well he did in his math/physics classes at school (not AP tests).

The engineering academy at Blinn (Rellis) is also a strong possibility. And without knowing his hole application file, PSA is a possibility but not likely. Ususally these are second and third quarter applicants or first quarter with lower SAT scores than you son.

If he really wants to be an Aggie, as a backup choice, applying directly to one of the engineering academies that are not an admissions decisions offer (you can’t apply directly to Blinn eningeering academy) like the engineering academy at Brenham, or Austin Community College, McAllen, El Centro system in Dallas, and Alamo College District- to begin his Aggie Engineering career and finish up at A&M.
