I am not going to debate schools within MD. This comes up every yr. Every student will say they attend a competitive school. Competitive could mean many things. For example, competitive in your county, your state or the country?

When you submit your hs transcript for your application, admissions will also look at the school profile. That is all that matters. Whether, you, I or the man on the moon thinks the school is competitive means nothing, it is all about how UMDCP admissions views your course rigor and the school profile when deciding if it is to their level.

This is why some kids with a lower gpa will gain admittance over another student with a higher gpa. This is why posters ask what state. NJ/NY and CT are very competitive academically, not only that, but many of these kids apply to UMDCP. The problem for them is UMDCP does not want to become UMDCP NJ or UMDCP NY. They want diversity.

This is also true for IS. UMDCP does not want to become UMDCP Montgomery. They take kids from all across the state. Again, you can be in the top 15% at your school in Montgomery County’s #1 school, and get a “we regret at this time…” letter. You can be in the top 25% from Kent County with lower stats and get the “Congrats, at this time…” letter.

Yes, stats matter to UMDCP, but so does diversity. People are not asking to be nosy, they are asking because where you reside can be that mitigating factor.

Honestly this is true for every State U. VA Tech has many No VA applicants, but their acceptance rate is actually lower than other counties. Purely from a stat reason.

UNCCH may have % wise more IS students, but their acceptance rate is lower for them than OOS.

Lots of things go into the equation besides just your hs stats. Those things range from URM to OOS and what OOS?
