Chances of Acceptance?

Hi im a high school senior and I was wondering what my chances are of being accepted in Cal Poly SLO. My GPA is a 3.8 unweighted 4.2 weighted. My SAT scores are pretty bad but i plan on retaking it in november and december. Its a 1820 Cr-590 Math-660 my 1830 score is more uneven thats why im choosing my 1820 one . Its CR-480 (I think it was because i bubbled wrong) and MAth- 760. I also plan on taking ACT.

P.S. Im planning on entering as an Architecture or Architectural Engineer Major. So if you are currently in one of those majors please let me know. I have some questions :] because im debating between the two right now.

Definitely take the ACT. My daughter scored better on that vs. the SAT. I read where Cal Poly SLO actually prefers the ACT, even though more students take the SAT. Good luck!

I got a 1600 on the sat, and than a 27 on the act. The english is way easier than thecritical reading which is good for you, you can actually study for it since its al grammar rules compared to endless vocab and passages on the sat. Plus cal poly prefers it, and you can use your best scores from the act AND sat combined(super scoring)

Thanks guys. :] alright ill definately take the ACT.

Those majors are two of the toughest to get into at Cal Poly. I know they also look for AP classes, which helps keep the work load/graduating on time easier. Do you have many AP classes (esp math/science)? And, yes, I second taking the ACT … and getting a good score :)

By the end of senior year id have taken 7. haha I don’t know if that is average compared to the rest of the nation but its pretty average at my school -_-. These are the classes i took. AP Calc AB AP Chemistry AP Us History (Senior Year)- AP Calc BC AP Economics AP Psychology and AP Rhetoric.
Thanks for your help guys :]

I know you said you were going to take the ACT but I just wanted to say it really does help lol. I had a friend with similar stats as me, 9 ap’s similar grades similar classes same major, we both took the SAT and I got 1990 and he got 2130. I also took the ACT and got a 32 and he did not take it. I was accepted and he was denied. I can’t say it was just because of the ACT but it did seem to help.

Also 7 ap’s should be fine I know architecture is very difficult to get in to so anything extra that you could do would probably help. Maybe an internship or a small class outside of school, anything to make you stand out

My daughter had a 4.0 gpa unweighted, 4.2 weighted, 2060 SAT. She applied to architecture regular decision and was waitlisted, then denied. A friend with similar stats applied early decision and was accepted. SO… if SLO is truly your first choice, either take the ACT or re-take the SAT (and bring up the score), and apply early decision.
My daughter did get accepted into Cal Poly Pomona architecture, so do consider that as an option as well - it’s also a great school.
Good Luck!

@Waitfornow. Thanks :] and yea im doing an internship for a small company this summer. 150 hours.

@Zita00 Thanks too!. im kinda scared now  haha . in October im doing SAT 2s for Chemistry History and MATH level 2. and that means i only have November and December to retake the SAT1 . For the ACT i still have september - december. Should I still try for to apply for early decision? Am I allowed to submit my SAT/ACT scores after i apply ?
P.S. Is it possible to get rejected for being overqualified? Because you daughter had a 4.2 gpa and the average gpa cal poly SLO accepts is 3.8. Also your daughter’s SAT is much higher than the average SAT scores of other SLO applicants?

Also, just wondering. How many APs did your daughter take Zita00?

And Does anyone know if Engineering is easier to get in for Cal Poly SLO than Arch or ArchE ?

Arch is more difficult, and I know you asked Zita but I’m not sure you’d get rejected for being over qualified. Maybe high grades and high scores aren’t necessarily enough for an acceptance.

alving0107 - Don’t mean to scare you! Arch is insanely impacted, so the ‘average’ gpa and test scores for SLO don’t really apply - and the freshman class of 2010 really drove those numbers up.
My daughter only took one AP - Calc ab.
We are pretty convinced that she would have gotten in if she’d applied early decision. She knows several people who applied for arch (she was in a high school arch drafting program and pretty much the whole class applied to SLO). The people she knows who got into SLO ED all had very similar stats as her. She doesn’t know anyone personally who got in regular decision.
We didn’t go ED because she was going to need financial aid to go to SLO and early decision is binding. We didn’t know that lack of financial aid will get you out of the ED contract. (“We grow old too soon and smart too late!”)
You can send test scores after the application date, but if the ED decisions have already been made then they won’t help there. Your best bet with that question is to call the admissions office and ask. They are very helpful.

Good luck!

Thanks again ! haha. yea I think im going to visit the school this Friday and see what i find out. I looked online at 2010 statistics. The gpa for arch program was 3.95 or somethign and sat was 1325 (CR and Math) and engineering was 4.05 and 1370. Which means I definately have to retake the SAT and do better. Also I plan to apply for financial aid so does that mean i cant do ED ?
