On UT Austin's website, it says something about CAP students being treated as transfer students since the application processes are very similar. But does UT Austin have a preference for admitting CAP students over transfer students from other schools, if I'm applying for Business?

I have a full tuition scholarship at UT Dallas and will probably have 8 AP exam credits by the end of the year so I'm pretty sure I won't be doing CAP, but I just want to make sure the chances are the same since I still want to try to transfer to UT Austin later on, if I can get into its Business program.

CAP students have automatic admission into COLA and UGS if I’m not mistaken, they might have priority over transfers when it comes to the other academic schools of UT but not much to hinder your chances. If you can keep your GPA at UTD above a 3.8 then you should be able to get into McCombs, CAP or not.

Ahh okay, I think a 3.8 should be a manageable goal for me. Thanks!

Just in case anyone wants to know, I know of people who had 3.96 GPAs as a CAP student and denied into McCombs. The cutoff for Fall 2014 was 4.0.

If UT is your ultimate goal, I would go with CAP even though you have a lot of AP credit… As long as you’re able to take 30 hours at UTD, then you can do CAP and you’ll be guaranteed admission to the school. You’ll compete with other transfers to get into McCombs, but at least you’ll have guaranteed admission to the school to fall back on. From there, you can always do an internal transfer.

The average transfer GPA for external transfer (so I guess CAP too) into McCombs was a 3.9 this year. Not sure if they show preference to CAP since they are already in the UT system or not. They do show slight preference if you are at UT Austin already and transferring in from another UT Austin college (internal transfer). The internal transfer avg GPA was 3.8 this year.
