Chances of Admission, help/rate me?

I was looking at colleges recently and have made a list of my academic achievements and possible schools.

I was looking at:
1. University of Michigan
2. Michigan Tech
3. University of Toledo
4. Michigan State University
5. UCLA
6. Stanford
7. University of the Pacific

I live in Michigan, and I am currently a Junior in high school. I'm very outgoing and comfortable speaking in front of and around people, and will receive glowing letters of recommendation from my teachers (I am also a strong writer, which will help with the admissions letters). I have a 3.97 GPA (only received one A-). I want to major in Electrical Engineering (possibly double-major in spanish), and go into Patent Law after I receive my undergraduate degree. My family is not rich but we are not poor either, I would say comfortable middle-class. My uncle graduated from University of Michigan, and later their law school, with honors and now makes considerable contributions to the University, and my grandfather is a professor at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (if that would make any difference?)

Here's my "resume":
-3.97 GPA
-Captain of the men's varsity tennis team (2 years by graduation), on the varsity tennis team for 4 years, 3 year all conference athlete
-Member of the varsity (state-champion) debate team (3 years by graduation)
-Will be a member of the National Honor Society
-Partake in community service (I.E. coaching the youth rec-ed tennis team)
-By graduation will have completed five years of Spanish
-I have not taken the ACT or SAT (ACT is more popular in Michigan but I know that Engineering schools like the SAT too) but the PLAN test has predicted me to receive a 28-32 on the ACT
-Have great relationships with my teachers and they would write great letters of recommendation
-Has written stories published in the school literary magazine

The classes I will take between this year and next include:
-Precalc., Adv. Trig, and AP Calc
-Accelerated Chemistry and Physics
-AP English Language
-Advanced Debate and Speech
-Spanish 4 and Spanish 5 (5 being taken at Eastern Michigan University for the dual-enrollment program)
- AP gov and AP US history
-Honors Humanities
-Shakespeare English course

Now my question is, based on this profile, which of the colleges mentioned could I get into? I know Stanford is tough, but what about the other ones? And also, based on this profile, which of these colleges would be best for me personally? And if anybody knows of any other colleges that might be an option for me I would appreciate it. Please rate my current resume and give me tips on how to improve it!

Just for fun, what would my chances of acceptance at Stanford be, I know they're tough, but would I even stand a chance?

Thanks for any help!

What’s your class rank or decile?

Aside from Stanford, your chances at the other schools are pretty good. Your projected ACT score, your good but not great ECs, and your course rigor, will make the odds of acceptance at Stanford beyond a high reach. You will also need to take some SAT IIs in math and physics. I’m not sure why you are applying to OOS publics, however, when you have at lease two great schools in your home state. Also don’t get why you are applying to UCLA rather than UCBerkeley and University of the Pacific… the one in Stockton, CA correct? There are much better choices for your major than UOP.

My kid is at UCBerkeley (MechE) but had we lived in Michigan and were able to pay in-state tuition he would have become a Wolverine in a heartbeat. In closing, I would add some more schools in the high match range. Let us know if you want to add any more schools to your list and I’m sure there will be some suggestions although your projected ACT range is very broad.

Thank you! After looking a little further, I don’t think UOP is really an open option, but Grand Valley State might be a good school to look into. I’m leaning towards UofM the most right now, what other activities might I add to have a higher chance of acceptance?

Class rank is 30 out of a little more than 300 students

At this point I think it will come down to a good showing on your ACT/SAT I and IIs.

Not to be mean, but I seriosuly don’t understand how you have Stanford and The University of Toledo on the same list. :/

jshain- That’s what I was thinking too, what score should I ideally aim for to be accepted to UofM?

OhioMom- I know that’s an odd combination to say the least, I’m just keeping all my possible options open.

Ohiomom2, I was thinking the same thing until I saw his double major interests… EE and Spanish!:)

I think you will probably need to get a 30 for a decent shot.

I have been doing some more research, how would Ohio State University and UC Berkeley match up against the other schools? And what do my chances at these schools look like? If possible, what order do you believe these schools should be in (from best to worst) for my major?

Mitch, It does not make good financial sense to apply to any OOS publics. Cal will be harder to get accepted to than Michigan, since you would be OOS, and it is “roughly” comparable to UMichigan. The OSU would be easier to get accepted to, but is not as highly ranked and you would be paying OOS tuition there. You are better off going to Michigan State if you don’t get accepted to UMichigan.

Wait for your “real” test scores and then let’s take it from there…

After taking the PSAT at my high school, I received a fairly high score (92 percentile I believe) and have recently been sent an email from The University of Chicago. I looked it up and it is ranked very high, and I after some research I found articles talking about the engineering program they will be implementing next year (my senior year in high school).

My question is: based on my above stats and extracurricular activities, what would be my chances of being accepted to this college, and what could I do in the upcoming year and a half of high school to help better my chances of admissions.

Right now I’m really considering U of M and UChicago. I know UChicago would be much more expensive, but with the right amount of financial aid would it be worthwhile to apply here anyway?

Bro, so far you have a pretty good resume going on. However, it is difficult to see whether you have a chance of getting into those colleges without the sat/act scores. They play a major part of the college admission~! since you have good gpa, as long as you score in the high 20s (30s would be awesome), you should be admitted to most of the colleges. If your talking about UCLA, Stanford, and U of Michigan then study hard because you need to score in the high 30s for act or over 2000 sat. Well good luck to your college future~! btw, i got admitted to purdue, Univ of pacific, and IIT engineering and my gpa was very similar to yours XD hope this post helped!

By looking at your resume, you seem to have a good chance on your colleges. I hope you will do good on your SAT/ACT. By the way, I’m currently a senior in high school in Hawaii.

^^You don’t need high 30s for those schools lol. 30 would be standard for UMich, 30+ would put you in the running for UCLA and Stanford. 2000+ on the SAT would be acceptable assuming the other parts of your resume are good enough.

I would say very good chances for most of those schools. Unless you get recruited for tennis though, Stanford’s a big reach (things like NHS and standard community service aren’t the most impressive ECs).

Don’t get too excited because you’ve gotten email from top schools, they’ll email anyone who finds their way onto their email list (checking the box on the PSAT, filling out a card etc). UChicago’s not known for engineering, and if they are just starting a program then you may be better off going to an already established program where you know what to expect. Your chances of UChicago are probably only slightly better than Stanford.

Good luck with your admissions and apps and stuff.

You are obviously a pretty good tennis player, so have you looked into contacting coaches at the schools that interest you? It might be a way to give you an edge in the admissions decision. Good luck!
