Chances of admission?

My GPA isn't that extraordinary but on my first ACT I got a 29 but I'm planning on retaking it and trying for a 3 point increase. I take part in a lot of ECs and have done a lot of volunteering and things like that.

What are the requirements to get into the school?

SDSU doesn’t look at ECs or volunteer work at all. You can’t even put it on your application. I think the average admit had a 3.65 gpa. You can calculate your eligibility index here: [San Diego State University | Admissions](<a href=“First-Year Students | SDSU”>First-Year Students | SDSU)

Personally I was admitted with a much lower GPA but a higher than average SAT.

Good news/bad news for you.

Let’s start with the good news. San Diego State (and all CSUs but Cal Poly SLO) use a simple formula to rank applicants.

(CSU GPA ) x 200 + (10 x ACT Comp)
3.5 x 200 = 700 + 29x 10 = 990
or for those with an SAT - ( CSU GPA ) x 800 + Your SAT math and reading.
3.5 x800 = 2800 + 1280 = 4080
Only semester grades from college prep courses in grades 10 & 11 (+/- are ignored) are used to calculate your CSU GPA. A max of 8 semester AP/honors courses are included.

They consider only a handful of factors - where you live, did you complete the a-g requirements, your ACT/SAT and your CSU GPA. Letters of rec, ECs, jobs, life challenges, etc do not matter.

They make sure you completed the required courses, calculate your index and stack applicants accordingly. They accept from the top of the stack until the seats are full.

Local (live close to SDSU) students have a pretty low admission threshold. With your ACT, a 3.0 would probably get you in.

In state but out of area students are held to a higher standard. I understand the line this year was above 4100 SAT and above 1000 ACT. This means you’d need 3.6+ CSU GPA.

Out of state students have a still higher threshold.

I’d suggest you go here and calculate your CSU GPA so you know where you stand.
[CSUMentor - Plan for College - High School Students - GPA Calculator](<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU)

I’d also caution that SDSU is getting more selective each year. Even if your index is comfortably above this year’s threshold, apply to a few other CSUs as a back up.
