Chances of Admission?

Hello! I am a High School Senior living in Florida (not a Floridian, but I am a permanent Florida resident with Green Card and Social Security Number) who will apply to UF as a backup college (being the 4th in line after Georgia Tech, Caltech, and my top choice, MIT). I would like to know if UF is secure enough to be a backup choice for me, and if not, could someone please recommend a college that would? Notice the general pattern in my applications (institutes of technology and engineering schools), and if you think there is a better backup in Florida for me, please tell me so! Thank you!

AP Tests:

European History: 4
Psychology: 4
U.S. History: 4
English Language: 4
Calculus AB: Plan on Taking
English Literature: Plan on Taking
Human Geography: Plan on Taking
Physics C: Plan on Taking
Macroeconomics: Plan on Taking
U.S. Government & Politics: Plan on Taking

SAT I (Taken In My Junior Year, Near The End):

Math: 680
Critical Reading: 700
Writing: 650

SAT II (Taken On Vacation Between 11th & 12th Grade):

Mathematics Level 1: 720
U.S. History: 690
Literature: 710

Extracurricular Activities:
-Currently in Chess Club. Plan to continue if transportation is available.
-Currently in Judo, and have been for several months (in a rather on and off basis), earning a yellow belt. Plan to continue if transportation is available.
-Was in MAO (Mu Alpha Theta - The Math National Honor Society) for a year. Due to problems involving teacher strikes, a website that never was updated, and lack of transportation I only accumulated 1 hour of tutoring and therefore did not show up to induction. The deadline for this year has probably passed, too, and even if it did not, I have transportation issues.
-Was in Spectrum (The GSA: Gay-Straight Allaince) for a year, although attendance dropped off near the end of the year due to transportation. Plan to rejoin if it is still offered this year, and if transportation is available.
-Had a story published in INK, my school's literary magazine (on the plus/minus side, it was a story featuring a former English teacher in hell torturing kids with her research paper. I have avoided said teacher ever since).

That's pretty much it. I don't know my GPA, and won't until my first report card. What are my chances? Thanks for answering! ^_^

EDIT: Oh, one more thing. Is there any advantage (admission wise) to applying for one entrance term over another?

UF is not a good back up/safety for you. I am not saying that you shouldn’t apply, just that it is not a safety for anyone since the admission’s here can seem pretty random (see old admissions threads about who got in and who didn’t). If your SAT’s were higher then maybe it would be a safer option. Your EC’s are unremarkable. With your current stats, FSU would be a safer “backup”. FSU admissions are very selective but not quite so random as UF. I don’t know anyone, with your stats (who applied reasonably early in the game) who did not get into FSU (not so with UF). There is no difference/advantage in applying for summer over Fall at UF (but there is at FSU).

Well put seiclan. UF can’t be relied on as a lone safety anymore.

Also seiclan, are you completely sure that there is no difference between applying for fall or summer? I’ve heard some pretty concrete sounding numbers about how much lower the average stats are for summer applicants compared to fall.

Allright, thank you for your response. I will try retaking the SAT I this weekend (which hopefully could boost up my math score… last time I took it it was with a scientific calculator (TI-36 II) and I had not finished Honors Algebra II. Now I am in AP Calculus AB and will take it with a TI-84+, both of which should help me greatly) to see if I can have a better chance at the University of Florida. As a backup, I believe I will also apply to Florida State University and the University of South Florida in Tampa. Thanks again!

“Three years after university officials capped the size of the freshman class at about 6,600, competition at UF is at an all-time high, forcing admissions workers to choose among the brightest and leaving behind an unprecedented number of disappointed families. Of those who applied to be part of this fall’s incoming freshman class, an estimated 42 percent were accepted – the lowest acceptance rate in the history of the state’s public schools. Selectivity at the state’s top university is expected to heighten as UF continues to work toward becoming one of the nation’s Top 10 public universities. It should also be noted, the Yield rate was at 57% for last year.”

A 1380 SAT should be pretty safe at FSU, but apply early. Fall 2008 admissions will be the most competitive in history.

With your grades + 1380, you’re a guarantee at FSU

OP, by all means apply if UF is the place you want to go to. No one here is an adcom to tell you what your chances really are. The whole application is carefully reviewed. Your Scores are actually HIGHER than most acceptees to UF and you can consider it one of your back ups.

SAT score (25/75 percentile) for the class 2006-2007 were:

Math 580-670 ( YOURS IS 680 )
Critical Reading 560-670 ( YOURS is 700 )
Combined 1140- 1360 ( YOURS IS 1380 )

It seems to me that in fact, you have a very good chance. With UF not offering free rides to National Merits anymore, the school is becoming less atractive to students that were lured by that.

Overall acceptance rate (excluding early action and early decision) was a high 48%.

Keep working hard and good luck!!

“No one here is an adcom to tell you what your chances really are.”
Thanks for pointing that out, I doubt he realized. He asked for his chances, we responded.

“Your Scores are actually HIGHER than most acceptees to UF and you can consider it one of your back ups.” “It seems to me that in fact, you have a very good chance.”
He was asking for a BACKUP, as in, the last resort if he doesn’t get into the other three selective schools he mentioned. Just because his stats were higher than the average doesn’t by any means constitute an admittance.

What pleasure do you get out of taking cheap shots at UF on its forum? Get a hobby or something

You would not be a “guarantee” at FSU if you apply too late even with your nice grades and scores.

Due to extremely heavy demand in Fall 2008 FSU may close admissions early. They may do this at any time in that admissions cycle. They have already closed Spring 2008 and forced thousands of applicants into the Fall cycle. If your application is not submitted before the gate is closed, your credentials will not matter - you would not be admitted.

Okay, based on the kids at my school, if you have mostly A’s and scattered, B’s you are in… However, w/o a GPA or any grades given, I couldn’t tell you, but either way, your classes are challenging, your SAT scores are good, and your AP scores imply you did well in the classes (however the AP scores are not used for admissions).

Anyways, I know you are probably going to get into UF, but you still shouldn’t choose it as a safety school. Even if you are #1 in your class w/ a 1600 SAT, you just never know anymore…

That’s true for some schools, (ivies, MIT, Standford) but let’s be real…UF is not one of them by any stretch of the imagination…

Last year, a few people from my high school (with approx 1300 SATs, 4.4 GPAs, full IB with APs 10th, 11th, and 12th grade for electives) were accepted into MIT and Georgia Tech but rejected from UF…and a few days ago I met someone (with a 1000 GPA and just a few APs) who was waitlisted by FSU and accepted into UF…UF admissions can be ridiculously and unfairly random.

*1000 Sat…

Amanda, some schools reject applicants with top scores if they feel the student is applying for the sake of applying (safety) and is really not interested in the school. As a rule, the application will have to show ‘something’ that indicates a genuine motivation. (For instance, this is a common thing at UWashington, if you have not visited the school, you will be rejected )

These schools know that the applicant is likely to accept an offer from one of the more prestigious schools in the country and sometimes they reject them to keep their yield high and their acceptances low.

I am surprised UF would do that, especially when until just last year they were literally paying National Merits to attend. Most of those National Merits are top scorers also GPA wise.

The conclusion is that if you are top of your class and you show on your application that you really want to attend UF, they won’t turn you down.

According to FSU, competition for the summer term is not as fierce as the competition for fall entry.

Do think they might be the same, but UF is actually not telling the truth?

I believe that pretty much applies to all schools that have rolling admissions. Clearly, UF has no motivation to acknowledge that fact.

I recently sw a GC, who indicated that UF is becoming very hard to get in and shouldnt be taken lightly as a safety anymore. With that said, I think in Fla, we have some pretty great schools UF, FSU, UCF, USF, New College of FL, Florida A&M. I would suggest you explore those schools for your interest and see what appeals to you. With your great stats, you seem in for Bright Futures Scholarships at all of these UNIV. While I understand you have your preference of MIT, CAL TECH, GA TECH, you may want to consider getting a free ride for your undergrad at any of your State schools, then attend one of your preferences for Grad. Good luck with your decision!

We know of several kids who were accepted to UF in Summer who would not be competitive in Fall. This did apply at FSU and UF at least in 2006.
