Chances of Admission?

Hey guys, I’m currently a high school junior from the Bay Area. I just arrived home last weekend after touring several east coast colleges for about a week. Brown was 1 among the 7 total that I visited, and it definitely stood out to me as one of the best (as did Penn, for which I have posted as well). Although I’m not sure if I want to apply ED, I would like to know where I would stand if I end up choosing to do so. Here is all of my information:

GPA: 4.2-4.5 [weighted]; 3.7-4.0 [unweighted].
SAT: 2380 [800 CR, 800 W, 780 M]
SAT II: 800 M, 800 Chem, 770 Spanish ← retaking in June
Classes: [skipping 9th due to insignificance]

10th-
AP European History
Honors English II
Honors Pre-Calculus
AP Computer Science A
Honors Chemistry
Honors Spanish III

11th-
Honors English III
AP US History
AP Spanish Language
AP Calculus AB
AP Biology
Research I/II [time during the day to work on project]

12th- [approved classes]
AP Physics C
AP Calculus C
Free Period/Honors Differential Equations
Adv. Topics in Spanish/AP Macro Economics
AP English Literature
AP Art History

note: the classes divided by the “/” are each one semester long

As far as my extracurriculars go…

I am currently conducting a research experiment titled “Testing the Responses of Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus Plutei to Different Predatory Stimuli.” This involves a lot of lab work, resources from Stanford University, and time both in and out of school hours.

I am on the Varsity Volleyball team this year. I have been on the JV team for the previous two years and was a co-captain last year.

I am a co-founder and the Vice President of our school’s Biology Club, which provides students opportunities to conduct lab experiments outside of the classroom on topics that interest them more. We also work on organizing our school’s greenhouse and plan on arranging field trips and inviting guest speakers.

I have competed in several science competitions, such as WonderFest [semi-finalist], the Biology Olympiad [results will be out soon, but I’m pretty sure I qualified for the next level], and Science Bowl, a competitive quiz bowl type of team for which I am yet to compete.

Over the summer I plan on researching at whichever institute I get into. It will be a science-based research internship. I plan on submitting any findings into Siemens, Intel, and JSHS. If I do not get into any programs, however, I plan on attending Stanford summer college and conducting my own independent research using any knowledge I might gain from the courses.

I am also a very active member of our school’s Global Empowerment and Outreach club, which focuses on spreading awareness throughout our school on the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals, and how students can play a part in their realization.

I am a also a very active member of our school’s National Honor Society. I tutor at a school called KIPP Heartwood every other Saturday for two hours, where I teach elementary school students from underprivileged backgrounds some basics about arithmetic, chemistry, and earth sciences.

I attended a 4 week summer research program called COSMOS, where I experimented the extremophilia of different strains of bacteria and attended several lectures on astrobiology, astrophysics, evolutionary theory, and archaeology.

Lastly, I am the webmaster of our school’s Spanish National Honor Society. I am currently working with Adobe DreamWeaver to architect our school’s SNHS web page.

Sorry I wrote so much, but I thought leaving anything out would remove from the overall dynamic of what my application will look like. Please leave any comments, advice, and insights into my chances of getting into Brown ED, and thank you so much for your time!

Rejected, probably.

Well you certainly have incredible stats. Amazing test scores, and wonderful GPA and ECs. You have strong chances, but Brown is extraordinarily competitive and difficult for even the best (which you certainly are) to get into. Good Luck! :)

you know you’ll be fine :)

I think you have a fantastic shot, but like college3231 said, Brown is an extremely competitive school…and it’s rather known for deferring people in the early decision round rather than accepting/rejecting. I don’t know if that’s a good thing…

Hi anacoluthon123,

Congrats. You’re getting a head start on college admissions (ahead of alot of people in your graduating class), and that’s a good thing to have: to get started on things ASAP. I like that.

Now on to academics. You have performed immensely well in school, as you have an A average while managing a very tough course load, 10 APs and 1 college course. That is very impressive. Your test scores are also mighty impressive, because very few people have that high 2300s, and your SAT Subjects are great. By the way, please please please don’t retake that Spanish Subject. A 770 is a very good score, and you’re not expected to be perfect … no one is! (At least you’re human… I hope)

Your ECs are also impressive. You take the initiative to design web pages for clubs (Dreamweaver is a very awesome tool to have, I must admit) and you demonstrate leadership in quite a few aspects of your activities. You also sound very ambitious, as you seem very interested in submitting to Siemens and Intel STS, which btw are one of the most prestigious HS competitions in this country. If you do get an award (semi), it will raise eyebrows, but it will not guarantee admission. (Good luck!)

Overall, you’re a very impressive applicant. However, admission officers at Brown work tirelessly to assemble an interesting Class of 2014 out of 25000 applicants. That’s a tough job. Notice I said “interesting,” because they can’t POSSIBLY pick out all the perfect applicants, because otherwise everyone at Brown would be the same … perfect and possibly robotic. You have the stats and everything else to excel at Brown. But what makes you stand out? You should be passionate about something. That can be anything: solving math problems, researching the unknown, or as simple as baking a cake. Reveal that passion in your essays. Admission officers love passion, because that is something that helps make people interesting and human.

Chances: **REACH/b

One small gripe though. If you’re SO interested in coming to Brown, you should totally go to Summer@Brown instead of the Stanford Summer Program, because then your interest in Brown will be more genuine.

Most of all, GOOD LUCK!

I’m getting a 9.15% chance of acceptance!!1!!1!111 But then again 99% of all statistics are made up on the spot and mean nothing. Oh wait…

I think your scores and gpa are very competitive, however I think that Brown is really interested in passions/interesting ECs, and yours, while fine, are not as exciting (not exactly the right word but still) as they could be. I would avoid doing research if you dont actually want to because unless you’ve shown commitment to a lab (i worked in one for 2 years) I don’t think Brown would regard it that highly.
In any case, have a great essays and you’ll have a good shot!

I would bet that you would get in.

Every time I see a thread like this, I want to throw myself off a cliff.
Congrats on your acceptance to Brown. Jerk. :)

Either you are a) making these stats up or b) really seeking an ego boost. seriously? they call them “chance” threads because they are for people who are unsure.
