<p>My child is at a competitive public high school in the southeast. SATs 680 verbal, 630 writing, 550 math on first try. Great grades(4.3 GPA). Winner of a well recognized national award for his writing, and interested in a small liberal arts school with a great English program. Two questions: 1. would his profile be competitive?; and 2. would Middlebury be a good fit?</p>
<p>I would not submit the SAT score.</p>
<p>Those SAT’s are awful. He needs to retake or he will be rejected.</p>
<p>Drought, you could be more respectful. Yes, the SAT scores are on the low side, but you don’t have to discourage someone like that; instead, give them advice on how to improve.</p>

LACs value much more than scores and gpa; they look at an individual’s qualities/passions and how they’ve pursued them. I can not tell you if his/her “profile” is considered competitive or not because I do not work on an adcom, but I can tell you that if your child can get his/her SAT scores up and show leadership through extracurricular activities, he/she will be considered a “competitive applicant.”</p>
<p>Middlebury is well known for its foreign language and international affairs programs. I do not know enough about the English program, but an education at Middlebury is extraordinary regardless of the major, in my opinion.</p>
<p>Your child should do more research on schools that offer strong english programs, if that’s what he/she takes a strong interest in.</p>

<p>680 is not bad! Two 680s would put him in the ballpark but the math score is a problem. If you can afford math tutoring, it would be worth it.</p>
<p>I’m guessing this person is a junior. They should definitely apply. There is still time to push up the SAT scores.</p>
<p>Drought might not be nice, but he’s being honest. koufax asked for chances, not optimistic chances.</p>
<p>You might want to try the ACT as well since Midd will take either. I agree the 680’s aren’t horrid, but the math needs to come up to meet the other two at the very least.</p>
<p>And I will agree Midd considers far more than scores (Gpa and standardized test scores), and just getting great grades and scores isn’t going to cut it.</p>
<p>…subject tests? Might be a good idea. Middlebury accepts three SAT IIs in lieu of the SAT I. Otherwise, retake the SAT or consider the ACT.</p>
<p>If he plans to retake the SAT scores, make sure he retakes them. Only the verbal score is inside the middle 50% of Middlebury SAT scores for first years; the writing score is below, and the math score is well below. Tutoring, or even an SAT course (if that’s an option financially) would be helpful.

<p>Congrats on his winning the writing award. I’m sure that that will help, but admissions reps may wonder why his SAT writing score is below the 25th percentile for Middlebury students.</p>
