Chances of admittance into University of Michigan--Ann Arbor?

Hi,

I am a sophomore in high school with a 3.56 unweighted GPA, 3.89 academic core GPA, and a 4.6739 weighted GPA. I rank #9 out of 591 students.

I know for a fact that my GPAs (especially my unweighted) is low for U of M, but please note that I still have a semester to go (plus junior year), and I'm predicting that I will have a 3.6-something GPA when this school year ends.

I attend high school in Florida. The school that I attend has a very poor reputation because the majority of students that articulate into the school don't care about grades, test scores, etc. However, for those students that DO care about graduating and doing well, like myself, it is very competitive.

Last year, when I was a freshman, I attended a different a high school and transferred over to my current school toward the end of the school year. At the other school, even though it had a better reputation, the courses were much easier. There was only approximately 150 students in my class and when I was there, I ranked #1.

Anyways, last year, my grades are as follows:

(courses taken from old high school)
AP Human Geography Semester 1: A
Research Semester 1: A
Personal Fitness Semester 1: A
Algebra 2 Honors Semester 1: A
AP Human Geography Semester 2: A
Research Semester 2: A
Health Semester 1: A
Algebra 2 Honors Semester 2: A

(courses taken from current high school)
Intro. To Info Tech Semester 2: A
Biology Honors Semester 2: B
Team Sports 2 Semester 2: B+
TV Production 1 Semester 2: A
World Literature (English) Honors Semester 2: A
Journalism 1 Honors (NP) Semester 2: A
English 1 Honors Semester 1 (ONLINE): A
Biology Honors Semester 1 (ONLINE): A

If you think my schedule was weird, it's because I went to a school that was on block schedule (4x4) and my current school is on rotator schedule (7x7). Therefore, when I switched over during semester 2, I missed the first semesters of English and Biology. To catch up, I took both of them online.

Oh, on the AP HumanGeo Exam, I passed with a 3.

This year, I really messed up. I was absent a lot from school (and I usually have good attendance) because I had was very sick and my grades dropped as a result. However, I've recovered.

Anyways, here is my grades from last semester,

Chemistry 1 Honors Semester 1: A
AP Psychology Semester 1: C+
Pre-Calculus Honors Semester 1: C+
AP World History: B+
Journalism 2 Honors (NP) Semester 1: A
English 2 Honors: B+
AP Environmental Science Semester 1: A

(I'm taking Spanish 1 online)

I've taken the hardest, most rigorous courses that are offered at my school. Actually, they only allow sophomores to take two AP classes, but since I fulfilled my math credits, they put my in AP Environmental.

My grades have improved quarter by quarter, but even after a major improvement second quarter, my overall semester grades were bad because I did very, very poorly first quarter.

Third quarter I did especially well. 3rd quarter grades are as follows:

Chem A
AP Psych: B
PreCal: A
AP World: A
Journalism: A
English: A
AP Env. Science: A

I'm doing well right now (4th quarter) so my semester 2 (hopefully) be grades will be good.

My ECs aren't great, but they will be better.

1.) News Co-editor of the school newspaper
2.) volunteer in the hospital
3.) recently inducted into NHS
4.) I knit and donate hats for babies and cancer patients for the hospital I volunteer at (it's a hobby that I enjoy, very relaxing)

I just want to know what should I do to increase my chances of acceptance especially since I'm out of state? What should I improve on (besides GPA)? Please note that I have done the best that I can given my resources. I do know that sometimes your best isn't good enough, and I would really, really appreciate it if you guys can give me some pointers.

Thanks.

I'll update this post continuously and add new information about my new grades, test scores, etc.

Oh, I'm Asian and female (if you hadn't already figured from my username). :)

Thanks again!!

So I suppose rank is computed on the basis of weighted GPA? If so, you might have a better chance at UVA or W&M than at UMI because UVA/W&M care about weighted. Even so a 32+/2150+ is required to even have a chance at UMI…

So I suppose UF could be a non-reach you can use, if eligible for Bright Futures.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I took Algebra 1 Honors and Geometry Honors in 7th and 8th grade, respectively. I don’t know if that counts for anything, but I’ve been told it’s better to show everything, rather than leaving things out.

(7th grade)
Algebra 1 Honors Semester 1: B+
Algebra 1 Honors Semester 2 B

(8th grade)
Geometry Honors Semester 1: B+
Geometry Honors Semester 2: B+

Yes, rank is determined by weighted GPA. Thank you, I haven’t even considered UVA, but I know it’s a very good public school. And W&M is a very good liberal arts school.

I just want a school that has a very good English program and strong in other areas, as well.

Do you really think UF would be a non-reach for me? Because I am eligible for Bright Futures.

Thanks so much. Your comment is very kind and helpful.

For UF to be a match, then you’d better have 29+/2000+…

Then again, at 32+/2150+ UVA/W&M are more realistic than Michigan (high match apiece)

Okay, I totally understand. Thank you for being realistic with me.

What can I do so Michigan CAN become realistic? And when you say high match apiece, you mean UVA/W&M, right?

I am planning on taking 5 AP’s, duel enrollment courses, and a couple online honor courses junior (next) year.

Thanks again!

First, check with your family if they can support you ~$55k per year for UMich. With your stat, you are not likely to get any merit aid and they don’t give much need based aid to oos either. If it is financially feasible, they you need to bring up your GPA and test scores. You know, even if you get straight A from now on, your cumulative uwGPA will still be below 3.8. This would be your major burden for UMich.

Thanks! I understand.
