Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and I have few questions about my chances of getting into Harvard University. I don’t want to sound like a typical member who asks ‘Will I get in?’ : I just want your opinion.
I have an SAT score of 1300 (Math: 740 English: 560), SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 2 (790) and Physics (660) and a TOEFL score of 85 (Reading: 21; Listening: 20; Speaking: 24; Writing: 20). Since I am an international student, in my country we have grading system on scale from 1 to 5. My GPA is 5/5 all three years of high school and my midyear GPA is 5/5 as well.
I have all Microsoft Office Specialist 2016 Suite certificates, as well as Adobe Certified Associate Illustrator and Photoshop certificates.
I have done a three-month internship in an IT Company as a web developer and I have also finished a full-stack web development course lasting 6 months.
I have also many other extracurricular activities.
Will Harvard University throw my application immediately in bin after my low scores or I will still have a chance of getting admitted? Do you know someone who got into Ivy School with low standardized test scores?
*I am applying for the Computer Science major.
Thanks to everyone’s contribution in advance.
Your chances are virtually non-existant. Your 85 TOEFL score is the weakest part of your application. That would likely explain your low Verbal score on the SAT.
Harvard does not require TOEFL, but they do require (not surprisingly) proficiency in English. The usual benchmark for TOEFL is 100, so the 85 and the weak SAT EBRW score will raise giant red flags over your ability to survive at Harvard.
You really got me sad hahaha. Thanks for your reply.
Thank you for your reply.
Don’t be sad. You are clearly intelligent and ambitious and those traits will serve you well. Just focus on schools where admission is more likely. Good luck!
My college list is consisted of: Austin College, Colby College, Colgate University, Franklin and Marshall College, Harvard University, New York University, Northeastern University, Stanford University, Trinity College, Tufts University, and University of Richmond.
Am I having a nice chance at any of these?
You have a good chance at Austin College.
Northeastern would be a likely admit but with your TOEFL score you would likely be offered NUImmerse. They do not look at SAT scores for international students.

For regular admission you would need a TOEFL score > 99.
Thanks for your response. I have one more question. Will I be able to qualify for a scholarship and financial aid for this NU Immerse?
Do you have any budget limitations at all?
Are you a high school senior? Are your applications already sent in?
Northeastern does not offer need based aid to internationals. Merit aid would be doubtful but possible.
Well, probably like 10k, the most. Yes I am a senior and I have already applied to upper mentioned universities
Major Reach- Harvard University, Stanford University
Reach- Colby College, Colgate University, New York University, Northeastern University, Trinity College, Tufts University, University of Richmond
Match- Austin College, Franklin and Marshall College
What was the thought process behind this? Especially since you’re international and need aid.
I don’t know much about Austin College but F&M’s average SAT is 1375 and it’s more competitive than Trinity these days (if you want to split hairs). Given that significant aid to international students is hard to come by, I’d put every one of these schools in the reach category and would bump several into the major reach category.
@Temperantia I was mostly going off of if the SAT score is in the middle 50% (hence F&M being a “match”). But all US schools are a reach for international students, I was just trying to give an idea of where OP stands in comparison to domestic applicants.
