Chances of AU vs GWU

Hi, I've completed applications to both AU and GWU and I'm waiting to hear back. So for now, I'm here to gauge my chances of getting into either school.

I applied to the School of Communication at AU and the SMPA at GWU.

My qualifications –

3.0 GPA at Central Michigan University in Journalism classes
3.5 GPA at Washtenaw Community College in Michigan – about 60 credits full-time earned here.

Extracurriculars – have been working at the Washtenaw newspaper for a year as Photo Editor, have authored many news articles that have been published as well as taking several journalism classes.

High school grades were rather poor, I think I had a 2.7 GPA, #130 out of 400 or something close to that, but I graduated in 2008. Now it's 2012.

I had some active duty military service between high school and college as well.

27 Composite score on the ACT.

Glowing letters of recommendation from my instructors, but I don't know how much the schools will consider those.

So do I have decent chances for AU? It's my understanding that AU is slightly easier to get into than GWU, which in turn is easier than Georgetown.

My mother is a Georgetown Law Center graduate.

Does anyone have some input on this?

Unfortunately, it’s really hard to peg transfer applicants.

For undergrad, it’s much easier. Mostly GPA and SAT/ACT, plus a little bit of work experience, essays and extracurricular activities, and a tad of URM/legacy, and there you have it.

For transfers, much more weight is placed on work and life experience plus essays and will this person make a net positive contribution to the school. 3.5 isn’t a deal breaker, but it also may not wow them. A good essay and recommendations will certainly help. Also know that that GPA may not get you much financial aid, and both schools are expensive, with GWU’s costs crossing the $55k/year line recently.

Have you visited both campuses? They aren’t too similar and the only reason they are compared so often is their location.

Good luck, and please keep us informed as I will be applying to both for spring 2013 matriculation.
