Chances of Becoming a Spartan!?

I recently applied to MSU and was wondering what my chances of acceptance were. I was accepted GVSU but Michigan State has always been the school I've wanted to go to. I love it's campus and the courses offered really fit my aspirations. Thanks for any comments or advice offered!

I’d say you have a very good chance! You have good grades and excellent extra curriculars and awards. Good luck and I wouldn’t even worry about it if I were you!

I would say 50/50 only because of your GPA (is that weighted or uw?). It’s in the bottom 25% and MSU seems to be more focused on GPA than test scores.

I would say you’ll probably get deferred and if you can keep your 7th semester GPA at a 3.5+ then you’d probably have a very good shot.

Thanks for the responses! That’s my weighted GPA. I did kind of poorly freshman and sophomore year but my trend is definitely going upwards. And yeah, I was thinking that might happen. Also, I’m thinking about dropping Drama 1 for College Writing to strengthen my Second Semester Senior course schedule. Thanks alot for the advice and help!

You’ll probably get deferred to seventh semester, but don’t worry if you do. It’s pretty common, even among people with stronger scores and GPAs than yourself. You still have a great shot, just do well your seventh semester and you should be fine!

I think you will definitely get accepted. I got accepted at an on-site admissions event they had and I have a 3.3 overall with a 23 on the ACT and 2 AP classes. I also have 4 extracurricular activities with three leadership positions (President, VP, Secretary). I think you’re a shoe-in! :)

One of my buddies just got deferred for his seventh semester grades with a 3.33 and a 27, so it’s a tough call.

Aeriss, honestly you’re lucky. You’re I’m the bottom 25% for both GPA and IIRC, ACT (or you’re just barely in the bottom end of the middle 50%). Congrats on getting in, but spartan3’s scenario is more likely for the OP.

^ Sorry, I was posting from my phone. That should say “in the bottom 25%”, not “I’m the bottom”.

I had almost the exact same ACT and gpa and i was accepted two weeks after i submitted. I had everything complete by 9/27 though. They are now deferring people with really high ACT and gpas, but since you have such strong ec I would say you will be fine!

I did not realize that that was your weighted GPA. I would say you will probably get deferred that is pretty low for MSU.

FYI, my son was accepted just recently (and very quickly–about 10 days after applying), with a 3.36 weighted GPA, but good test scores (math SAT of 730 and ACT Math of 32–other scores pretty good, too), and from out-of-state. He is planning to study Engineering, and hoping to get accepted at an in-state school, too.

Hey everyone! So, I was deferred. They asked for my mid-semester grades, so that would be my 1st quarter report card? I got a 3.72 gpa for the 1st quarter and will be sending along a letter explaining my interest and some extracurricular activities and awards I’ve earned since applying, as well as some letters of recommendation. Also, my counselor is giving a recommendation with a phone call when she sends my mid-semester grades. Any tips or advice during the deferral process would be greatly appreciated! Wish me luck and I’ll let everyone know what happens. :)

Quick note, here are some of the things I was thinking about mentioning to them:
-Won the 110% award for my hard work and enthusiasm this tennis season. (Only one of these is given to the hardest working member of each sport each year)
-Won the Downriver-All Academic Award for doing well in tennis and maintaining a good gpa
-Donated blood which I do every 8 weeks as well as volunteer with the American Red Cross
-Organized a food drive raising 500lbs of food for the homeless this Thanksgiving by creating a joint effort with the Interact and Student council which I am president and executive officer of respectively.
-Organizing another alternative spring break for next year. This year, I participated in Habitat for Humanity over spring break.(forgot to mention this on my application)

Jwilson, that is somewhat surprising that you were deferred with those stats, but romanigypsies said somewhere else that MSU defers a lot of high ACT low GPA students which would be you. I would also recommend that you pay the housing deposit at your 2nd choice (it seems like its GVSU, according to your post) in case MSU does end up rejecting you.

Also, another reason MSU might have rejected you is that you’re from downriver, and those schools aren’t nearly as good as some of those schools where MSU gets a lot of students(Oakland County for the most part, and parts of Wayne and Macomb counties).

I highly doubt it has anything to do with your high school being down river.

With a 3.72 GPA, I’d say you have a good shot. What’s your schedule like this semester (as in, are any of those non-AP classes honors classes or no)? Senior schedule strength will have a decent impact on whether or not you’re admitted.

Best of luck!!

Yeah, I highly doubt my deferral has anything to do with the fact that I go to a downriver school. It’s actually quite a good high school, many people come to Allen Park for school of choice. I have back-ups of course. Thanks for the help romanigypsyeyes! No, we don’t really offer honor classes, just AP. This semester, I have AP Biology, Calculus, Debate, Newspaper Journalism, AP Government, and Psychology. Next semester, my Psychology and debate classes will be switched with Symphonic Choir and Drama. Although, I’m thinking about switching drama for college writing as it might look like a blow-off. Wish me luck!

Gotcha. In that case I’d say you have a pretty good shot! Best of luck and let us know how it turns out!

One more thing romanigypsyeyes, how many letters of recommendation do you think i should send with my follow-up letter? I have one from an AP class which I have my lowest grade in this quarter, one from my AP chem and regular chem teacher, one from the principal, one from my drama/AP lang teacher, and one from my Student Council sponsor.

Jwilson, you really don’t need to send in that many recommendation letters! Since you were deferred, I’d send in 1 or 2 at the most (submit the strongest letters you can…the administrators/teachers that know you best etc.). They likely won’t read the rest. Good luck!
