greetings everyone, a little about me to give a baseline. I attended a military boarding school for high school of which I graduated from in 2009 with a ~2.6GPA. After graduation I enlisted as a light infantry soldier and have been in the military ever since. While in the service I am finishing up an associates degree in General Studies from Central Texas College, my GPA is currently a 4.0 but I haven't taken an SAT/ACT since high school (which means it is now expired).

I have slightly over 2 years until my contract is up and I will be moving forward to complete a BA (and ideally a Grad) and I am interested in attending NYU both because of it's Computer Science Majors and it's location. I have been out of touch with the "education system" for so long that I am afraid their will be some glaringly obvious things that I will forget to do which is why I am starting early in asking for advice, things to plan for etc. What might my chances be to transfer over to NYU and what should I be doing to make my resume more appealing so that I may have a higher chance of acceptance?

If you are interested in Computer Science, why not apply to schools like Cornell/MIT/Carnegie Mellon instead? No one knows what your chances are like, and don’t worry too much about your high school GPA as they will primarily be looking at your college transcript (is that 4.0 in tough classes and CS-related, or in easy “gpa-boosters?”). I’d say talk about your experiences in the military. I haven’t served but from an outsider’s perspective I would talk about discipline and perseverance, then somehow relate that to computer science and academics.

You are applying to NYU for grad school right? You will need to take the grad school’s equivalent of the SAT/ACT, which I don’t know what Computer Science majors require but for business it is the GMAT and for law, the LSAT. Do a little bit of review for these tests, but aside from that just keep your GPA up and you have a very good shot.

To be honest I was considering applying to schools on an ivy level but assumed that I would be rejected. My 4.0GPA is split almost evenly between “gpa-boosters” and Computer Science/Math related classes, I am somewhat limited though in my options while I am still on active duty.

For clarity I would like to get my undergrad at NYU and if possible my grad after, my associates degree in Gen Studies was as much to get me back in the swing of things as it was to improve my GPA. I did have the presence of mind though to focus my classes (as much as possible) on C.S/Math related materials… I will look into what the testing procedures are though for a grad level, thanks for the heads up on that.
