I'm applying to 12 Biology REU's (Research experience for undergraduates) for the summer 2008. Their requirements are minimum 2.75-3.0 GPA. I have a 3.24 from my current college and 3.02 cumulative (Both current college and transfer). I have two great letters of recommendation and I technically meet their requirements. I screwed up in my first 3 semesters of college and I've retaken alot of classes. In 4 semesters time I've raised my GPA from a 2.01 to a 3.24, I feel that i've explained my situation well in my personal statements. Honestly, do I have a chance?

I am also wondering how competitive these REUs are.

I have GPA of 3.30 or so by the end of sophomore year, will that be good enough to get in? I will be applying to lesser known schools.
