Chances of Being Admitted to Northeastern?

I’m currently a junior at a public high school in Massachusetts (relatively wealthy area but my family is lower class). I wanted to see what my chances of being admitted to Northeastern (ED) for the class of 2020, providing that everything goes well? It might be kind of a reach due to not having many EC’s, and other schools I’m considering are: UMass Amherst, Boston College, Colgate, University of Washington, Willamette, Syracuse, McGill, etc.

I hope to major in either Biotechnology or general Biology, but I’m not sure yet!

GPA (UW): 3.9
GPA (W): 4.13
SAT I: 1460 (I plan on taking it again in March)
Current Courseload: AP Chem, AP Physics 1 (ouch), AP Spanish Lang, Honors Humanities, Honors Precalculus. MY grades right now are mostly A- and a couple B+, some A
Not sure about my senior year courseload but I am certainly planning on taking AP Bio and AP Calc
Freshman and Sophomore year I took all honors classes, as my school is small and doesn’t offer many AP classes

EC’s: Tennis Team (four years-- JV freshman and sophomore, hoping for Varsity this year), started a photography club at my school (Photography/filmography is a major passion of mine – does starting a youtube channel count as an EC? personally I think hobbies are just as important :)), ballet dancer for 5 years (quit sophomore year due to health problems), mindfulness club (2 yrs), started a band with my friends and we play some local gigs (I’m a drummer), and hopefully National Honors Society for senior year.

Work experience: Hostess at a local restaurant for 2 years (and planning to continue senior year), shadowing scientists at a local Biotechnology company near me, helped out at an art gallery for a few months.

I am a caucasian female.

Chance me? I know it might be too early to tell, but I’m just hoping things go well.

forgot to mention i was part of choir for 2 years and the harmony group as well, but i didnt have room for them in my schedule this year

Not sure if it helps, but I was recently accepted ED with a 1340 on the SAT with only 5 AP’s through High school, 2 I’m taking now. I think my essay definitely helped. My GPA i think was like a 3.8 UW and 4.1 W but I’m not sure. I did a lot of extracurriculars though and worked part time. I think as long as you’re a generally well rounded student and strive for 3.8-4.0 mark and above 1400 on the SAT you have a good chance of getting in.

northeastern likes to see your commitment and involvement within your school. starting a club looks very good. i also agree with lemonclover8 in saying that your SAT is fine. ED will definitely give you a boost.

also, the other schools youre looking at are a good mix for your stats and ecs. Univ of Wash is getting slightly harder for oos applicants but i think you will be fine. syracuse is an amazing school

I have a masters from NEU CAMD- MDES —Sustainable Urban Environment. I was very active in aiding in bachelors with deign work and tutoring due to my professional background and degrees. I became familiar with a lot of the directors and faculty.

Answer: compared to UW. Northeastern is a harder school due to demanding internships/ co-ops but it has one of best college to job rate. Meaning u get hired with the Northeastern co-op network and their dedication to their graduates particularly in Bostonprovidenx and New York as well as any other smaller cities in states above Virginia basically. Northeastern graduates are very highly sought due to focus on getting u ready for work and networking.

Back to the original question. Admission is not as tough as UW but it better school. It’s due to how many people want the instate tuition in Washington. Both schools are delivery hard but as long as Northeastrb sees what there looking for it fine: grades a must, scare a must, and often forgotten is show a direct route and focus. They like to see that your mature and that you have a good head of your direction. This is with the understanding of your age so not exact just a very good idea with a reason.

Think of what everyone else says as an applicant distinguish yourself. NEU is expensive but if u can pull it off and use your teachers/ network while there you will come out with top job in top firms versus you will not get this at UW.

NEU … even Harvard Yale or Mit are not as hard as u think if you meet the standard grade mark BUT show you are unique in your purpose and focus.

Really think of how many say the same thing and these admin people see it all so having extracurricular per say is nothing unless it’s a unique combo related to your… again a purpose or path of yours.

Best of luck and apply to schools that have the dept and focus u want not the city or social. Or even the dept. it’s there approach and your personality and what first. All about the fit of the school and you. U will get more this way.

Sorry for long detail but always willing to help and little sister is applying to schools now and she happens to like UW and UC but I’m pro Boston U And Northeastern due to the city culture and co-op nature of schools. I think you will meet so many more important connections and life experiences but if u always dreamed of the real whole college and sports school culture UW USC or UC are good schools and meet the whole super college culture. U would miss that at many urban schools.

Hope I helped. Again , I just happen to mention two of my sisters choices . All are great schools !

thank you so much, this was quite reassuring! Yes I am much more interested in urban schools. Do you have any thoughts on how Northeastern views taking a gap year prior to starting?

When you say you are lower class, does that mean your family is poor? If so, you might be better off applying to some high endowment schools, like Columbia, Stanford, and Harvard where you can get a need-based full ride. I know someone who got into Columbia and they paid for tuition, room and board, books and everything else. When her grandpa died, they paid for a trip to South America for her to attend the funeral. Also, applying to schools far from Mass will increase your chances. Also, Johns Hopkins just got a huge gift so that students don’t need any loans. If you have ANY financial need, JHU will cover it, thanks to Michael Bloomberg.

Other than that, you have a good chance at NU.

Be careful about taking a gap year, it can have tax implications for your parents if you lose dependent status. But if you use it to do something cool and make sure you meet the dependent qualifications (6 months of study per year) then it should be fine.

Hiya, I just got accepted to Mathematics and Business w/ a 56k Dean’s scholarship for the D’amore-McKim School of Business. I would have to agree that you should take the SAT again in march, and remember you can take it at the start of senior year too if you don’t like the results, but 1460 is pretty solid. Northeastern superstores as well I believe, so consider which subject English or Math you want to raise most. Other than that, I would say you have a pretty good chance, but if you really want to make that application shine, find some way to show a definitive form of leadership in your extracurriculars. Are you president of the photography club since you founded it? I think they like hearing things like that. Anyways, good luck and I hope to see you in a year.
