Chances of being this...

Hi, I have a problem that doesn't let me me sleep well.

I am a freshman in high school, part of a class of 1000+. I try my best straight A's and know what I want to be, I am integrated in a medical club, etc. Now, I have a B in AP Spanish, which I am taking to boost my GPA, therefore I can't sleep thinking about how that is affecting my GPA, performance, chances of acceptance, etc. I have not openly admitted this, or plan to, but indirectly, I really want to be a val or land in a good ranking place. I take all honors core subjects (I'm taking biology, not earth-space science) and I have straight A's in those. I can slightly blame most of my MS teachers for not making the things hard enough to prepare us for HS. Interim Reports(mid-quarter) are around the corner and I really don't want seeing a B on an AP class. That said, Here is the problem:

What are my chances of being a val if I get a B in AP Spanish on the first quarter of HS? Will at least get me in a high position ranking wise? What should I do to improve my GPA?

There are many colleges you can get into without having to be ranked near the top in a high school class… that said, did you take the SAT/ACT?

Not yet, I’m a freshman in High School. You may think I’m overreacting a bit :D

Okay, first of all, you are a freshmen! You have 15 quarters to go, so it is quite impossible to answer your questions. Additionally, you might not even know your class rank until after you send out college applications. At my school, they announce valedictorian and salutatorian at the end of your 7th semester in high school, which ends in mid-January. So, by that time, most RD college applications are due.

So if your school does it the same way (I guess it would be after the 14th quarter?), then your class rank won’t help you with college admissions.

I know that you want the personal satisfaction of being the best in your class, but like I said, it might not end up mattering where you fall in the end. Also, you have 1000 people in your class, which makes it even harder for you to be close to the top.

So I suppose that you have a shot to rank well in your class, but honestly, it is too early to tell. Additionally, we do not know much about the performance of your school as a whole so maybe Bs in the classes you mentioned are actually good.

Just focus on school and do the best you can. Wherever you end up in the rankings is where you were meant to end up in the rankings.

Good Luck!
