Chances of candidacy and acceptance

First, I would like to say hello, I have read a few topics on the forum but never found the need to register until now. I am currently a Junior in a private College Prep. school in NJ and am hoping to attend the USNA. I did not apply for the summer seminar(still kicking myself for that) and am filling out my preliminary application. If you could take a look at my grades and activities I would appreciate it greatly.

fordstang: Not sure what you’re looking for. Are you’re asking,“Am I likely to get an appointment?” No one here can answer that. With your test scores, leadership (get that Eagle finished!), and grades, you’ll almost certainly get a candidate number, which gives you the right to fill out the final USNA application. From that (plus the results of a Candidate Fitness Assessment), USNA will decide if you are scholastically qualified.

You also must be medically qualified. Many people are eliminated by the medical.

Beyond being scholastically qualified by USNA, to get an appointment you must also get a nomination. Most nominations come from Members of Congress (MOCs), although there are also Presidential nominations for children of active duty/retired service members, there are five Vice Presidential nominations given nationwide, and there are a few nominations through JROTC. NJ has lots of Mids, but some MOC districts are more competitive than others. Not knowing your district or who else is applying, there’s just no way to know how you will “stack up.”

What’s certain is that, if you don’t apply, you won’t get in. So, get going, and DON’T miss the deadlines for getting your applications in to your MOCs! Each application is a bit different, but each one requires letters of recommendation, and those take time. Some MOC deadlines can be as early as September, so plan accordingly.

Good luck!

Thanks for your response. I have one more question, on the preliminary application should I put my Technology club officer position, Boy Scouts, and National Honor Society there or should I wait until I (hopefully) fill out the “real” application?

Thanks once again for your time,
Matt B.

Put it down.

Agree with dyenior_2008: if there is something you would want the academy to know about you, put it on the preliminary app, and put it down again on the “final” app. You should definitely include activities if you have been involved in something for a long time (Boy Scouts, I would assume), or have leadership positions. In Boy Scouts, high rank, especially Eagle, counts as a leadership position, because Eagles have had to take on leadership to earn the rank.

Good luck!

dude you need to play more sports…
