Chances of Cornell and Georgetown early admission

Hi, I'll be a senior this upcoming year and have applied to these schools. Here's my Stats, I guess you could say.

Comments: My middle school teachers screwed me royally by putting me in low Social studies and English class, so that took my two years to work out.

SAT: 2240
ACT: 27
SAT Subject test: Bio-770
SAT Subject test: literature- 780

200 hours volunteering at a thrift shop
100 hours at a hospital

FBLA: 10- made regionals, could not attend. 11- president
Science Club: 11
Debate team: 11

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuump

A few items stand out as unusual:

Your SAT of 2240 (well into the 99th percentile) will be competitive at any highly selective school. However, your 27 ACT is dramatically lower (87th percentile). Unless this is a typo, do not send your ACT.

Your class rank rocketed from #53 at the end of sophmore year to #1 at the end of junior year. Again unless this is a typo, being Valedictorian is a huge boost to your application.

Only two years of foreign language, especially with the low grade in Spanish 2, will hurt your application. Not much you can do about it at this point, except consider how to address the issue in your application.

Your ECs don’t show much about who you are. The service hours are good, but be sure to emphasize accomplishments during your time and not simply “punching the clock”.

Overall, I would say that you will be competitive at both Cornell and Georgetown. However, both have admit rates below 20% which is likely a good approximation of your chances.

You have very impressive stats. However, so do the other 20,000 applicants at Georgetown and Cornell. Now, I didn’t apply to either of these schools, but my friend (and the valedictorian of the class) did. Here is what he had:

GPA: 4.0 UW
GPA: 4.3 W
ACT: 32
FBLA: VP, also, he won a few awards at the conference
MUN: President
Class Officer
Varsity Letter
Volunteer with Red Cross
AVID tutor
And the list goes on

He was deferred by Georgetown for EA, and wait-listed for general admission. However, he was accepted into Cornell and will be going there.

Overall, you have a fair chance at getting into both.

Some advice: your essay (aside from the interview) will really be your chance to show the admissions office why YOU should got to GU or Cornell. Don’t ******** your essay, it really is the make or break of and admission decision. And, be careful about your course load; DO NOT drop a class once it has been placed on your transcript; DO NOT think you can coast through the rest of the school year with B’s once you’re admitted. Anyway, best of luck.
