Chances of ED at Brown

Hello everyone, I'm currently a junior at a very large Texas public High School (3rd in state, and somewhere up there in the US) with 4200 students.

My class rank is 29/1122, which equates to a little above top 3% in the class. Our district goes on a 6 point weighted scale, which I know is odd, but my gpa is currently 6.42/7.0.

I've taken every AP course avialable to me, and every course that isn't Ap is honors. Even though my EC's aren't numerous, I am a very dedicated athlete at my school, which has a very competitive program indicated from it's large student body. That being said, I stay after 2-3 times a week to lift weights so I can have a chance at a starting spot.

Take note that I am the first caucasian idividual to take Spanish V AP at my hgihschool in 5 years, and im banking on Brown to note this course (which is very very very difficult by the way).

I also work part time for my father in his resedential remodling buisness to help out, since my mother doesnt not make income.

I hope my geographical residence, work situation, rigorous secondary record, and ability to work with other will help me get in as ED. Here are some of my stats:

GPA: 6.42/7.0
Class Rank: 29/1122
Highest reading/math SAT practice test: 1390
Ethnicity: White
Record: All AP/honors, including Spanish V AP, US/Wld hstry AP, Spanish IV AP, Plan to take Calc/ Bio 2 AP nxt year.
EC's: Football, Track, Octagon club, Mu Alpha Theta, NHS, Volunteer work, part time job.

Also, since many Ivy league(to my knowledge, please excuse my potential ignorance) do not understand that football is a way of life in Texas, and always will be. I plan to make very accurate description of my trials in my football career, and the mental/phsycial toughness it takes in 100 degree weather, with 98% relative humidity. Which makes it around 115 heat index :D

Thanks for all of your consideration, best of luck to all the Ivy apllicants :D

lol...goo f00tball!!

Haha yes football does rock indeed :) Could someone please evaluate my chances though? I need to know if i'm in an ivy pipe dream or not >.> Oh I forgot to mention that I'm taking Gov't/Eco AP as well next year. I'm also considering UPenn, Cornell, and Rice.

I'm guessing Plano?

Not, Plano, but Houston Texas in the Cypress fairbanks school district. May i please recieve some kind of feedback on my credentials or something?

You'd be a fool to highlight football in your essays. Are you aware that that kind of essay (sports oriented) is the most common? It wouldn't make you stand out at all, as many people apply for football (most recruited) and also because its simply not that big of a deal (try running up to 100 miles a week in 100 degree weather).

Yeah it is cysprings, and I hate it >.>

Football not that big of a deal? Please excuse my potential ignorance, but how many ivy apllicants actually play varsity football? And assuming you do run CC,( who would run that much on their own?) I do know your pain, as I do run long distance track as well. And as far as I know, most of the Ivy applicants on this board don't even touch sports. To downplay football is riduculous, because it is a 4 year commitment, year-round training, physically and mentally tough sport. I'm not some common jock trying to get an athletic ride to a Ivy, I think of myself as an intellectual first, a dedicated athlete second.

How good are you at football?

I'm pretty good, not the best. I do lift weights/run about 2-3 times a week in the offseason. I could maybe get recruited at Brown if I kept at it, but this admission process just really makes me want to study more than train nowdays... plus I'm small :(

I agree, many people write about their sports experience, it isn't a unique essay topic. Your rigor of classes is good, I don't know what that gpa means in 4.0 terms but it looks decent, and you have decent extracurriculars. I just re-read your post about the Spanish V, and I would like to note that while it is impressive that you are the first in 5 years, at my school Spanish isn't AP until VI, so I wouldn't bank on this Spanish V AP as being the determining factor in establishing what makes you academically impressive. I would try to get some leadership positions and some academic awards, and maybe think of another essay topic, unless you have something that will make your sports narrative different from others. Other than that, I think you have an ok chance.

Thanks for your support Laura, it's much appreciated. I'll heed your advice and hopefully I'll be able to attain my goals :D Yeah, I'm definitely going to have to set up some more time to ponder on an additonal essay topic, unless I can come up with an extraordinary football one. My school is odd about how they go abotu certain things, but spanish IV is spanish language exam, sspanish V is spanish literature exam, and spanish VI isn't offered im afraid.

Sure. :) I'm also attempting for Brown, but I won't be huge competition, don't worry. Oh, I know, and I realize that it's the highest level offered at your school. I'm just saying that I wouldn't use it as your primary source of proof of your exceptional intellectual curiousity, because they expect you to go up to the highest level possible. Did you skip a year to get to Spanish V? That would be worth mentioning if you did, or make sure your teacher/counselor includes it in the recommendation. Either way, since you are the first Caucasian to take this course in a long time, have your counselor or teacher mention it, but don't use it as an essay topic or something.

Awesome Larua, best of luck to you! Brown is an awesome school, plus I think it's the only Ivy that really fits me. Plus, I dont think anyone from my school is applying there. I'm close friends with most top5% students and I haven't heard then say anything. Mosty Rice, Cal Tech, Chicago, Northwestern, UT. I didn't actually skip a year to take it, I took first year Spanish in 7th grade and have every year since. I'll be sure to have someone mention that to Brown.

Thanks. You too. I would hope that we both get in. :) I have a thread on here as well, but not that many have replied (:(). It is. I visited it and loved it. Providence is such a pretty city. I don't think anyone from my school has gone to Brown in the last couple of years. I don't know why, people have applied and gotten into every other Ivy. It's rather weird. Our guidance counselor dissapproves of it, that could explain it. Cool. At my school they start with Spanish and French in elementary school. Latin in 8th grade. I've been taking Latin since 8th grade, so next year will be AP for me. Do, I would definitely get a rec from your Spanish teacher unless there is a different requirement, if you are such an exceptional Spanish student. At schools like Brown, any small edge can help. :)

Yes, indeed we did not do very well this year, but we did finish #3 in defense and #2 in rush offense. We nearly beat some teams that went to very far in state, most of our games were pretty close. This is a positive forum for constricive criticism/ obeservations, please leave your seditious babel elsewhere and concentrate on getting yourself in college, if not done so already. Just because we did poorly doesn't mean we dont work our butts off every day. Plus, we have 4 guys that are going to top football schools from our team. Unless you go to springs, or you're a district official, pleae refrain from making out which schools aren't "competitive" and which aren't.

That was probably a typo. Not everyone is anal about rechecking their posts. I notice that you also made several typos :"coudlve", "forfitted", "id", and the use of 'u''s instead of 'you''s.

Yes, please excuse my few grammatical errors as I'm very tired and have done nothing but SAT prep/ college research for the past 72 hours with very little sleep. lol.. let me work out the kinks... anitdisestablishmentarianism, mozzerlla, mississippi, consequentially, bah I think I'm good.
UPenn, Cornell, and Brown are my top three. Any idea on some highly rated safeties?

"Mozzarella"? I still have to say that this is my favorite word: floccinaucinihilipilification.

Good luck. Cornell should be easier than Brown and Penn, it has a much higher acceptance rate. Penn should be ok unless it's for Wharton (that I think has a very low acceptance rate). Would you mind rating my chances for my top 3 (the thread is somewhere on the second page I think)?

Sure, no prob :D

Awesome. Thank you! :)
