Thanks! I'd really appreciate it if you could tell me where I stand, thanks again!!

You will definitely get a scholarship to Miami. As of now, I think they would guarantee you 1/2 to full tuition. Their website lays things out pretty clearly.

D. had comparable stats with exactly the same ACT=33. Although her school did not rank either, rank is still usually determined by adcoms based on student GPA and class profile (at least that is what we were told by some other UG adcom). In D’s case, that was easy - she was the only one with the 4.0 uw, so she was #1 in her class. D. was in Honors on full tuition Merit scholarship, but she graduated in 2011. No other UG gave her that much. Looks like your D. might be planning pre-med? I just saw lots of medically related ECs. Anyway, my D. was pre-med and had a great time at Miami. Currently, almost done with 3rd year of Med. School.

In regards to Miamo of Ohio scholarships, once you are in a certain merit band (i.e. 32+ACT, 3.5+, half to full tuition), what is the deciding factor for obtaining the largest scholarship? Is it mainly rigor of coursework and extras? Or does a 35 ACT net more dollars than a 33 ACT? thanks

@jakedog13, good question. My D had 1410/2140 and a 3.72 UW GPA with an IB diploma. She was guaranteed a 1/2 to full tuition scholarship. I thought the IB factor may boost her chances for a larger scholy, but she was only offered 1/2 tuition. Not enough to entice her to attend.

It might help to apply early, but I’m not sure. My son had a 1400 sat score, and close to 4.0 weighted GPA, and he was offered very close to full tuition. Others with higher stats were offered much less. Visiting the campus or the recruiter when they come to the HS may help too.

The admissions director said that the only way people move in the different ranges is rigor of coursework. So that means that a 5.0 GPA and 1600 SAT would get exactly the same amount as a 3.7 and 1400 SAT if they took the same courses

“Miami University merit scholarships are highly competitive and, thus, not guaranteed. The academic qualifications determining scholarship awards are dependent on the strength of the applicant pool. Priority consideration for the full amount in the ranges below will be given to students applying for admission by December 1, 2014.”

I have no idea why he was offered so much and others with higher stats were offered less. He had several AP classes, but not a ridiculous number. He didn’t have any great ECs either. He did contact his admissions person and demonstrate interest. Maybe that mattered?

From the website, there is NO guarantee for merit for stats…

So a 1420 M+CR (equivalent to an ACT 32) would not be guaranteed to get half or whole. The IB may have been the boost for her to have gotten the half.

m2ck, I think the ‘no guarantee’ language is new. We received a post card from Miami last fall informing us that the 1/2 to full tuition scholarship was guaranteed based on the 1400+ SAT score and 3.7+ GPA. That’s the only reason my D applied. Your post has me curious…maybe I’m remembering things incorrectly. I’ll see if I can dig up the postcard.

I’m almost positive that language did not used to be there. That’s why we were looking at Miami. However, my guess is those ranges are pretty standard, else why even publish them? That statement there is probably just CYA legal language.

They added that guarantee about 3 years ago - I KNOW it was specific guarantee (at least 1/2 tuition for a specific gpa and test score). Seems like they may have removed it now ???

I would encourage anyone who is looking for scholarships to apply to those schools by their earliest date. That is usually December 1st. My D applied by 12/1 and was offered full OOS tuition plus about a 1/4 of her room/board/fees. It very much tipped the balance in MU’s favor. She is now a sophomore and I can’t imagine her at another school.

Well, I’m not sure it really matters since there are forces beyond your control such as number of kids from your region/state/HS… But here goes. ACT 33, GPA/W 4.2, 9 APs (4/5s), 4 year varsity athlete (regional/state), multiple other ECs, governors scholar, community service hours. Only two other kids from our county also applied to MU and none the previous two years (I dug up that gem ;). Two of the three got full OOS offers from MU and the third is ROTC.

Since your ACT is 33, you should get one of their better scholarships. While there are no guarantees, you likely would get at least half tuition.

Remember to apply before December 1st. :-bd
