So this fall, I'll be applying and I just want to know if I have good chances or bad chances. My SAT is 1720, ACT is 25, unweighted GPA is 3.8, weighted GPA 4.2. I'll be taking the SAT one last time and I'm hoping for 1800+.
I played volleyball for two years as a captain, but they weren't varsity. I also played club volleyball in a higher age group. For 3 years, I was in Student Council just as a member of the council. This year, I was voted onto Cabinet as an officer.
I do an average amount of community and service, only the minimum that was required when I was in the IB program, around 10 hours a year, and the minimum for Stu Co, which is around 12 hours a year of recorded volunteer hours, except we also do lots of charity work that isn't recorded so I don't know if those count or not. This year, I'll be working at my local soup kitchen once a week.
I was in IB for the first two years, then dropped out. I took one AP class last year (English) and 2 honors classes (Physics, Precalc). Now I'm taking three APs (English, Calculus, Biology). I was in an web design Internship class last year as well.
My biggest concern is that I'm out of state and therefore, I'm pretty sure my chances of getting accepted decrease. I know Santa Barbara only has 7% of its students out of state, which probably includes international students who are favored. So I have a feeling I my chances are low, but if anyone is out of state and attending, how do you think I measure up?

Your biggest concern is not a concern. Being an out of stater is actually a very beneficial factor. We need money, and YOU, as an out of stater will pay double as much the tuition as us in staters. Your stats are pretty decent for UCSB, now you just need a kick ass personal statement and you’re all set! hope you get in!

Your SAT/ACT are quite a bit below average for the campus. Take a prep course and really work to get those scores up.

Raise SAT to atleast 1950 or 2000.

My son had similar GPA and SAT/ACT scores, EC’s and volunteer work when applied for Fall 2013. Plus 2 honors and 7 AP classes. He was rejected but got into UCI, UCD, Cal Poly SLO, UCSC and UCR. He applied for the Environmental Studies major. You should work on your ACT/SAT scores and have great essays. Only 4 of his friends, all with a 4.0 GPA or greater were accepted for Fall 2013. His best friend applied as an EE major and got in Undeclared. He decided to go to UCR since he was accepted into the EE program there.
He was told there were 10,000 applications for the engineering program and only 400 accepted. Good luck…
