Chances of getting classes

I'm an international and live too far away, so i won't be attending CalSo. My intended major is economics/business. The courses i'm picking seems quite popular. I'm not sure if i'll get them and might get waitlisted. Could someone pls tell me which classes are a sure bet to getting enrolled and the ones where i might have to wait ??

My schedule:

Astro C10 (discovery)
Psych C162 (back-up in case i don't get astro)

Econ 100A (pre-req)
Stat 021 ( pre-req)
UGBA 010 (pre-req)

and i wanted to know also about seminars. Are they very popular ?? since they are supposed to take only a few students it seems my chances of getting into one is slim to none.

pls help.

As of right now, the open spots for your classes are:

Astron C10 - 458 openings

Econ 100A - 194 openings, however this class has multiple categories (new/readmitted student, College L&S, Open and Instructor approval). Not sure how many are open in the three categories that don’t require an individual class code from the instructor, but likely many openings still

Stat 21 - section 1 - 370 openings

Stat 21 - section 2 - 34 openings

UGBA 10 - 259 openings

Psych c162 - 54 openings, however this also has multiple categories (fresh/sophmores, psych majors that are non freshmen, newly admitted juniors, open, and instructor approval). All categories are open now but can’t see the allotment to each, thus the open and fresh/sophmore categories could close well before the full 54 are taken).

HOWEVER - you need a set of sections/discussions that don’t conflict. A class may have room in the section but the discussions that don’t conflict with your other classes are all full. Some classes even have fewer spots in the sum of the discussions than in the main lecture, thus you could be unable to register for it even though the lecture section still shows room. The devil is in the details - figure out the priority among your classes, find the sections and discussions that work together and monitor availability as you get closer to the date when your registration will take place.

I’m pretty much in the same situation as the OP and I too am worried about getting the right classes. I understand that there are openings now in the classes but considering that CalSo hasn’t even started doesn’t that mean most freshmen haven’t even enrolled till now? So what’s the likelihood that openings would still be there by the time time CalSo is over? Could you make an opinion based on the popularity of the above classes?

and what’s section 1/2 ?? are they the same thing just divided into two section to fit more ppl ?? are they usually taken by different profs ??

Astro C10 can be held off till Phase II. It’s a BIG class and doesn’t have an urgent need to be fulfilled. It’s a breadth so you can take other classes if it is full when you sign up.

The key to Telebears for the first years in Cal is to sign up for the classes you need and cannot compromise (can’t switch for another) like prerequisites in Phase I. Sign up for the variable classes like breadths second since they have less importance than the ones you cannot change.

You definitely need 1 Haas prereq so sign up for UGBA10 or Stats 21 first. I don’t know if you have fulfilled Econ 1 (for Haas) , but Econ 100A gets filled up fast so that should be a Phase I class. I would go with UGBA10 and Econ 100A for Phase I. You’ll probably end up with Purves for Stats.

A “section” for a lecture means a different professor/class. When you see LEC 001 and LEC 002, it sometimes means that there are 2 different teachers teaching the class with their own set of discussions/GSIs/course material/etc. (But 1 teacher could do 2 lectures for 2 different sets of classes. That’s only if you see the same name.) Obviously with the openings in Stats, more people want Stark and are avoiding Purves even though Stark’s class is smaller.

use. ESC.frozeninflames.net to check and see if all you intended courses can still fit. Make sure to check the box saying “Exclude Full Classes” when you try to generate a schedule

what about seminars ?? do you think i can get into any of them ??

and do you guys have any classes in mind which are an ABSOLUTE SURE bet to have openings when i register ?? for breadth or major pre-reqs …
