Chances of getting in on appeal

So I have recently been rejected from UCLA but It’s my #1 school therefor I want to appeal. These are some things that I could elaborate on & my stats are also included . I heard UCLA doesn’t care about recent awards or increase in academic excellence so here is what I have left. Do I have a chance ?

  • Elaborate on my hook ( for the last 7 years I volunteered with an association helping with the advancement of villages in Africa. In my personal statement I described myself more as a member while I was really a leader. I didn't elaborate on my visits to Nigeria, donating clothes, helping unfortunate children to read and write etc. I could make it sound amazing to be honest)
  • My mother is very ill and has recently backslided from her recovery. I didn't elaborate on how I drove to hospitals and studied in rehabs and Emergency rooms at the age of 15-17 years old. This took a big toll on my academic excellence but I still challenged myself with the classes I took. (7 APS) also I have been accepted to universities far from home and being in LA I would benefit because I would be closer to home to keep in touch with my mother. (Due to my fathers nonchalant attitude , I could elaborate on how they are considering divorce hence why I should be close to my mother because she has no other child or family member in the US but me)

HOOK!
For about 7 years I worked with an organization promoting advancement in a village in Africa! Fundraising, Annual Events, Visits to Nigeria! I did it all!

Your chances of appeal are low to none. You really do have to provide new information.
Not having fully described your leadership participation in your volunteer work or visits to Nigeria is a failing within your essay, not new information.

The only thing that may have an impact is your newly emerging family situation.
Are you in Southern California? If so, you should write a compelling story about needing to remain in the area (while still fulfilling your academic goals) to be available for your Mom particularly considering her history of illness.

Yes I am in so cal! So yes I could elaborate on that but it seems like you’re saying with that it’s still a very low chance

Here’s this from the UCLA admission site:

Since you weren’t offered the waiting list you weren’t really close to the cutoff for admission. IMO this will go nowhere.

Sorry to hear of your family situation, but that will not make up for the sub-par SAT scores. I hope you can find other LA options.
